In fact, there's even a (mildly insane) proposal to intentionally add Teflon to food, because the extra mass makes you feel full even though the Teflon just passes right through you.

Like many things, it's a spectator sport. Most people just parroted the opinions of the Go team -- which isn't a bad strategy, given how smart they are! Don't worry, the anti-generics crowd is still here, waiting to see how t

PROTIP: If you open a song in Audacity and tweak it slightly (I usually slow it down by 5%), you can trick your brain into processing it as a "new" song again. The returns are still diminishing, but I find I can eke a few more day

For all the people asking how this differs from Beeminder: my first reaction was "finally, a version of Beeminder that lets me pay $1000!" Beeminder is obviously amazing, but it really "loses its sting" when you can'

After I met my now-fiancée on OkCupid, I deactivated my profile, turned off notifications and forgot about it for a while. A while later, I thought it be nice to revisit the first messages we sent to each other, only to find that... OkCupid

Crysis 1 was definitely more fun. Tranq darts, freeze rays, throwing frying pans with Maximum Strength, "hacking" your .ini file to make yourself absurdly overpowered, etc. But I have to give Crysis 2 credit for its graphics. Comp

I actually love the foo.* syntax. Think about it like this: if foo were a struct, then foo.x would give you the x field. But what if you want all the fields? Then you'd write foo.* -- a Unix glob!

I really enjoyed the book, particularly Ann's trip reports, but fair warning: it contains a lot more love triangle drama and, uh, old people sex, than I was expecting. Also, I wish I could buy just the first half of the book -- I don&#

I was hoping this would explain a bit more about why the algorithm does the things it does. Do we have proofs for why certain types of mixing are more secure than others? Also, it's funny how even world-class cryptographers can think

I emphatically disagree, but I did notice that the full range of temperatures in the NOAA dataset is -30 to 120. I've updated the site to use that range.
