Well, if Microsoft delivered more value to shareholders (and to its employees), then those folks could choose to contribute that money to a variety of sources, philanthropic and otherwise. I'd personally think that the Foundation has done m

I don't think that was the outrageous or controversial part of the OP's comment at all. Making Microsoft a better company than they are today would just require beating Ballmer, which is not exactly difficult.

I'm inclined to agree with you (and I certainly don't care about Zed's current job), but Zed made a huge (and very public) fuss about his job hunt. Curiosity about the consequences of that job search seems only natural.

I think Apple is very strongly research-driven with respect to materials science and industrial design: the basic design of the iPhone / multitouch interface, the unibody design of recent MacBook Pros, the stainless steel antenna in the iPh

Foursquare is one of the few startups that I actively dislike (because they are responsible for much more noise than signal). At least in my mind, their brand represents some of the worst "Web 2.0"-era narcissism. Their growth is certainly

I know you're joking, but I don't see the moral concern about investment banking. You may not be making the world a better place (although that is very debatable), but you're not making it worse, either.

Security shouldn't be optional. That seems like a very dogmatic attitude. Security almost always comes at some cost (e.g., inconvenience), and sometimes that cost is not worth the benefit.

Still, I find it hard to fathom why the iPad only has 256MB of RAM, for example -- the cost difference between 256 and 512 MB of RAM is very small. More RAM will consume marginally more power, but that doesn't seem a convincing reason eithe

"Virtual memory" does not imply "it would have to swap"; indeed, the iPhone does have virtual memory, and each application has its own virtual address space.

If Sparkleshare develops some momentum, you could easily see third-parties compete to offer Sparkleshare storage as a service, in a similar manner to how Dropbox works today.

Pray that this mindset does not infect your ISPs and tempt them to introduce traffic caps. I don't think this would be such a bad thing -- just as you pay on a per-unit basis for the water and energy you use, paying per unit of bandwidth

I still don't see what "having fun" has to do with "solving customer needs": often customer needs are boring, esoteric, poorly-specified, and technically uninteresting -- exactly the opposite of the sort of thing you'd do to "have fun".

I think that's far too cynical. gdb is fine, but there is tons of room for improvement, and more competition in this area can only be a good thing. It is early days yet for LLDB, but it is a promising start. I've yet to see any IDE/debugg
