Right -- but as far as I know, switching between the 9400 and 9600 requires logging out. Seems strange if you'd actually see worse H264 performance using the 9600 than the 9400.

Apple’s own QuickTime on Snow Leopard only makes use of H.264 hardware acceleration with a single graphics card: the Nvidia 9400M. If you don’t have that graphics card in your Mac, you don’t get H.264 hardware acceleration, period. Seems

von Neumann is indisputably a genius, but IMHO his contributions to CS aren't quite as fundamental as Turing's. von Neumann's impact is definitely broader though.

In fairness, I think Turing is more accurately described as the "father of computer science." But I agree with the general point.

That is apparently due to a HN bug which strips single quotes from links. The WP article has an apostrophe in the title; the HN-modified link loses the apostrophe, and is broken.

the point of the title I took away was a reference to the Alice Cooper song lyric, which as spoken (sung) language, contains no apostrophe. The title of the Alice Cooper song absolutely contains an apostrophe: http://en.wikipedia.org/wik

Google's search quality very likely doesn't have very much to do with the PageRank algorithm as such. Certainly PageRank isn't much of a qualitative improvement over prior work like HITS, and any reasonable web-scale search engine can easil

The mayor's age is relevant, because being a mayor at 88 is quite unusual. White mayors or female mayors are to be expected; an 88 year old mayor who has served for 31 years is simply a remarkable part of the story.

You rarely need to use IMAP directly, though: most email apps are fine using a library that manages the details of the IMAP protocol under the covers, and presents a more sane interface.

There are lots of people in research looking at incorporating SSDs into the storage hierarchy in various ways. Not sure how much of this is going to be productized in the short term, but I wouldn't be surprised to see, say, a new release of

Personally I like one large monitor, because I find it fits my workflow better. If you're using two monitors and don't like needing to swivel your head back and forth, have you considering orienting them vertically? For writing code, the ex

A cursory examination of the patent would tell you that it says very little about map and reduce functions as such -- the emphasis is on the system for executing such functions in parallel for large-scale data transformation.

The relevant prior art is not the idea of a "map" or "reduce" function as such (that isn't what is significant about MR, anyway). The patent is about parallelizing M and R operators for large-scale data analysis; I think that the relevant p
