Have you read the other comments that show examples like inserting help output into your docs?

I hear complaints like this a lot, and it seems like a basic misunderstanding of Mastodon. It's not a place, and it's not a single service. It's a piece of software, run on thousands of instances by thousands of operators, a

Doesn't the original sentence cover your concern? "Learn how you learn."

I also had replies on Mastodon, and a discussion in IRC, all of which were similar to the comment on the blog post: experts telling me that learning styles were a myth, and so therefore, "learn how you learn" was kind of bogus. Bu

Hey everyone, this was my proposal. Don't take it too seriously. I tossed it off on Mastodon, it's not a PEP or anything. Python isn't going downhill because of me!

How do you feel about taking on a billion dollars of interest per year? Then fumbling new features to lose half the advertisers? What do you think of asking software engineers to bring screenshots of lines of code? It makes no sense.

This is nothing personal against Musk. When you look at what he has done since taking over Twitter, it's nothing but chaos. He doesn't seem to have a clue how to run that company. I have liked Twitter, and I hate what he is doi

My complaint with Musk is that he's running the company in a chaotic and destructive way. It's true, I don't agree with his politics, but that's not the problem here. He's got $1B/year of interest to pay, but

Have you followed the 3.11 performance improvements by the same group? It's ~25% faster than 3.10.

Are you really suggesting that more people know what "P3D" means than "3 days ago"?

What is untrustworthy about it?

Some people might mistakenly assume that "match" and "case" are now hard keywords, which would of course break lots of code. But they are soft keywords, so there's no issue.

I've now added "new modules" to the most recent handful of versions.

You can enforce the constraint, but it shouldn't be in the class itself. How to you make instances for tests?
45.
▲
by

It's fine to have an object that is only instantiated once. But there's no reason to enforce that in the class.

▲

You make it sound like "everything is an object" also means "there are no globals". What language is like that?
47.
▲
by

The point is to separate what is true about an object by its nature (what do we know about chess boards), from what is true about how we intend to use the object (we need only one of them). There's no reason to bundle those two concep

If you need just one, make just one. Why should the class enforce it?

I'm not saying it's a good idea to open it more than once at the same time, but nothing is preventing me from doing it, so I'm not sure what is meant by, "a file is a singleton"?

I don't know what you mean by "a file is a singleton": I have many files on my computer, and I can open any of them multiple times.

An important thing to note that is a bit buried in this text: Python bytecode changes in every version, sometimes just a little, sometimes a lot. So Python 3.10 has difference in the bytecode instruction set from 3.9, and 3.11 will have di

s/worse/different/ Have you tried to understand what cog does? It's a completely different use than the C preprocessor.

Cog works line-by-line, which sidesteps thorny quoting concerns, and makes it applicable to more syntaxes. It lets you use regular Python code instead of "html-ified" code in Jinja (for example). Certainly if you are happy with Ji

I did walk on the Esplanade, depending on where along Storrow Drive you consider it to start. My walks are getting longer (6.5 miles each), which will let me get to more places, including further down the Esplanade.

What I was doing on Freenode was providing a quick answer to questions, and also pointing out that most people had moved, so better answers were more likely on Libera. I never told people to not answer questions. If people wanted Freenode
