Also an extremely pretentious way to refer to the users of this forum. I have no reason to believe HN users are more cultured than the rest of society.

I temporarily worked in safety-critical software development. There's a lot of tools in that domain that simply aren't as googlable(read: expensive) and cannot be learned online. Often, in these sort of situations, the field isn&#

I'm not sure I understand - what's the benefit to the customer? If you gain alpha from hiring (3), you gain proportion of alpha + alpha. If you hire (4), you're paying a fee of alpha for a gain < alpha. The customer assume

I think it might be worth adding C-x C-c to the list of shortcuts, since people would like to know how to get out of the application once launching it. C-g is labeled as quit, which might be confusing to a beginner.

This, I hope is the end result of indie gaming. When your target market mostly consists of 16 year old boys, or people who have the same level of taste, it puts hard limits on what you can build. Add in risk-averse nature of high-budget AAA

While you are technically correct that tragedy of the commons only applies to nonexcludable-rival public goods, your pedantry has helped nobody in this comment thread learn more. There's a time for it, and most pedants fail to see when

I think halo is a good smart marketing move to associate future Microsoft consumer products with halo. The 360 is by far microsoft's biggest consumer electronic success, and halo it's flagship franchise. Kids growing up now with t

Every time I read ESR's stuff, I get the impression that he believes all hackers think exactly like him. Even worse, I can't imagine anyone, hacker or otherwise, wanting to be around a person that was anywhere near his conception

Given the sheer number of officials doing thing this, I can only assume this is done mostly out of ignorance about how email works. If I knew nothing about email, I could see myself assuming IT has a magic way to archive this. Remember when

Any idea sounds awful if you phrase it right. Any idea sounds good phrased right. I don't think this is a good metric at all to evaluate a start-up.

I love firefox, mostly because of the pentadactyl extension(not compatible with firefox 35, sadly) but it has a huge number of problems. Namely, it crashes far too often. It's extremely frustrating, and no number of bug reports I fill
