Newsflash: a distinct accent and unassimilated culture is a pretty predictable result of government-enforced segregation, a policy which still has not ended. Voluntary segregation on top of that makes it worse. Single-family zoning is expli

In the US, two popular anti-establishment candidates campaigned against free trade. Protectionism is popular. It's not a stereotype. I get that UBI doesn't prevent people from getting jobs. I support it. It's just not a solut

They are speaking for themselves. They want protectionism that will make us all less wealthy, and won't address the reality that automation is the real competitor. Someone has to come up with a good solution that makes everyone happier

Underpaid people who are pursing their passions will be fine with a UBI. People who lose their jobs to machines will have to rebuild their idea of why their life has value from scratch, and a UBI makes it clear that other people are still c

Agreed. While I think a basic income is a good idea, the people I think it will make better off don't actually want it. They want jobs. Perhaps we should be considering a new Works Progress Administration instead.

Leverage is important, but leveraged bets can be made with financial assets too. Our laws make leveraged bets on owner-occupied housing attractive, but I don't think there's an inherent financial advantage to other kinds of invest

My current pet theory is that they obfuscated Urbit so much because otherwise, the artificial scarcity of address space would be unenforceable. As it is, you have to make a huge investment in learning their tech to understand everything, an

This is the right answer. As far as I can tell, the only reason to buy a home is to lock in a particular home for your family over time at a stable price, which this equity structure does not address. Otherwise, you can just invest in real

Using laws to bias housing stock towards owner-occupancy is explicit economic segregation. Owning a home requires wealth that many families don't have, and they should have an equal right to all neighborhoods. Segregation is the defaul

It's generally good advice to stop buying and promoting cryptocurrencies as investments. If you're a developer, learn how to use these tools to make better software for users. If you're not a developer, keep your money in you

The decentralization vision does not require blind faith in Vitalik. The tools are already available. It's up to developers to pick them up and use them. Solving the scalability problem and moving to proof-of-stake requires some faith

Taxis are bad because it's profitable for taxi companies and politicians for them to be bad. "Just fix your taxis" is a pretty ridiculous suggestion in the face of regulatory capture. I have no desire for an Uber monopoly. I

Sorry, it's morally bankrupt. Four middle class families spend more on housing than most Bay Area single-family homeowners. If it were legal for those families to live in a four-plex, they'd outbid wealthy families for that land.

That Berkeley study only considers units subsidized by taxpayers when it talks about subsidized housing. Inclusionary zoning is not studied, and like all disincentives to build more homes, I think it makes displacement worse.
