If you're fine riding with other people, then a self driving car is just a Lyft Line with one extra seat available and without driver wages to pay. I think they're going to drive down the costs of a ride to a level where buying a

You're in for a treat, then. A blockchain is a world computer. Each program on the computer has its own storage that nothing else can write to, so anyone sending a transaction to the computer knows exactly what the result will be. (Mos

There are lots of uninformed claims here about Bitcoin's scalability. If it's a topic you're interested in, you should do some reading on your own. In particular, the Lightning Network proposal is a promising approach to dram

Glad you found it useful. The census bureau itself shifted to tract weighted density with the 2010 census, but I couldn't find a good city ranking on their site.

My point is that it's wrong to think of Los Angeles as the epitome of sprawl. It is not. It is an outlier of density compared to most American cities. "So yeah, if you head off from urban areas and include their low density suburb

Your understanding of Los Angeles is incorrect. The average Angeleno lives in a denser neighborhood than in all U.S. cities except New York and San Francisco. http://www.austincontrarian.com/austincontrarian/2012/0

I'd rather look up an identity to find what they've published rather than looking up a name to talk to a server that will hopefully give me what they've published. Luckily, cryptography lets us do that. http://ipfs

Augur is currently pre-alpha, and built on top of Ethereum, which is pre-beta. However, everything's developed in the open, so you're welcome to get set up and see how things look. Email me if you run into any roadblocks. niran@ni

Augur's key differentiator is that it's decentralized. It runs on Ethereum, a programmable blockchain. There is nothing to shut down: it runs on thousands of computers around the world. Prediction markets are a well-defined intera

Changing the name makes sense to me. Type safety isn't want people are looking for at the moment. The trend they're most related to is reactive programming, so they want a name that evokes that. It's a smart move. When Automa

The direct lineage matters because my point was that it's hard to convince people that a new currency is worth something. It's easy if you promise to redeem it for something people already value.

Give an example. The fiat currencies that people actually save in have a direct lineage from gold, or are linked to such a currency by monetary policy. Tax value alone has never given a new currency stable value.

There seems to be a general sense that short-term rentals make housing unaffordable. I disagree. We came up with the technology to scale a given piece of land to hundreds of residents at a low marginal cost a long time ago. Unfortunately, w

This is very cool, and the content-addressable web is going to be a huge leap forward for permanence and publishing without needing to run a server. Lots of people are working towards this future. In particular, you should look into IPFS.
