It is possible to launch a software startup to profitability without VC funding. I don't think this fact changes the "do what you love" message at all; it just means that you have a better chance at getting a decent slice of the pie if and

What choice did they have? Comply, and trust the honor of black hat hackers? Or refuse, and have customers' data appearing on FTP and torrent sites within the day? As a Linode customer, I would rather them choose the latter. Not to try and

Yes...for instance, I use Arch Linux. 64-bit. With no 32-bit support. I want to support Steam on Linux because I think it's a good thing. But I don't want to install 32-bit support in order to do so. I realize that I'm complaining about som

OK, it bothers me when people say "Steam on Linux". It's really "Steam on Ubuntu". Some other distros are supported with 32-bit only packages, but if you're running a 64-bit OS you need .deb package support. I haven't installed 32-bit suppo

By your logic we should also build bridges and tell people to drive over them and see if they collapse. There is a time and a place for analysis and trying to understand, a priori, the failure modes of a system. As the potential for loss in

I dunno... A democratic government is a government that rules through the will of the people rather than by the might of an institution. A democratic currency, then, would be a currency which derives its value from the willingness of the po

I don't understand what "anti-democratic" means in this context, so I won't comment on that part. But I think the author is alleging that bitcoin is based on mistrust sort of in the same way that stuffing currency in your mattress is based

Sure, if you want to convert my argument into straw-man form to more effectively belittle it, that is a very effective way to do so. A more accurate way to extend the analogy to transportation would be a company starting a free bus service
