It's the other way around, unless it's still the 90s. Can't go any deeper, so here goes: LCDs are clear by default with a big light behind them. You can see this on any Apple laptop, the glowing logo is just the backlight (watch it fade as

On the images/code drawing points: are there any benchmarks for this? I've been writing meticulous CGGradient type stuff recently, should I just make a gradient in Photoshop and call it a day instead?

"Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial is a better default! Show the good one to those of us that have it (all Mac OS X and iOS users).

The major problem is testing. Many corporations have in-house Web applications—both custom and third-party—that they access through their Web browsers, and before any new browser upgrade can be deployed to users, it must be tested to verif

I wonder how they'll deal with cheaters, since you can now have infinite copies for free.

The emulator itself is absolutely terrible, compared to, say, gnome-terminal or iTerm.

I find dislike of public transit strange. I have a strong dislike of cars - you have to pay for the car, you have to pay for insurance, you have to pay to fix it when it randomly breaks, you have to pay for gas, it lives outside your house

I sent a bunch of Cocoa classes at it, for no other reason than that's what's on my mind right now. NSView -> "nfcu". OK, fair enough. NSViewController -> "nfcu controller". OK, I guess. CAAnimation -> "salvation". This is proba

I've never used them, but after a bit of research, it seems that while they're visually big, they seem to provide a resolution that even a netbook outclasses, which would make them pretty bad for programming. There's also the issue with req

The problem I have with the subreddit system is that it's an all or nothing thing. Let's say I like video games, and one of those games is Minecraft. If I subscribe to the Minecraft reddit, it seems that about 1/Nth of the posts on my front

The author says that he doesn't particularly care about speed if development is nicer, but it's good to know anyways: http://shootout.alioth.debian.org/u32q/benchmark.php?test=al...

In my case that is a Snow Leopard disk (my MBP came with Leopard). So I have to install Snow Leopard, download and update to 10.6.7(?), and then download Lion? That's a pretty horrible user experience.

The one thing he didn't mention is Thunderbolt, and I think that it completely changes the iMac. Without it, you basically had the choice between SSDs, which were fast, and hard drives, which actually had enough space to store your stuff. I

These comments sum it up pretty nicely: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2498841 http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2499044 3 or 4 people per store is very low and is probably not that different, if at all, from typical hiring pract

SpiderMonkey used to be very slow. Wikipedia says Node.js was released in 2010, I'm not sure when development started, but if it was when V8 was significantly faster, it seems like an obvious choice. http://arewefastyet.com/old-awfy.php

It's a little hard to tell where the marble is in "3d" space. I think it might be a little better if it was even lighter while "underground". A lot of isometric games use shadows to show exactly where objects are - that could help as well.

Google releases the code that they have to (the kernel, anything else GPLed). Most of Android is not under the GPL (and it was written by Google anyways, so they can do whatever they want). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_(operating_s

Skulpt is Python implemented in JavaScript: http://www.skulpt.org/ Once this is done, I'd like to make a website that allows a user to request an arbitrary number of nested interpreters.

I'd consider Illustrator instead. It's vector based, it's great for layout, and boxes are boxes , not a set of pixels are are coincidentally shaped like a rectangle (admittedly, Photoshop is also capable of this, but it's much more limited

The only significant thing missing from Objective-C itself is garbage collection, I think (which completely changes the game on Mac OS X). Blocks work, of course, and besides that, Objective-C doesn't actually add that much to C (that's s
