For most of the world, you get a 30 day visa exemption if you fly in to Thailand. You get a 15 day exemption if you enter Thailand over land. If you're outside of Thailand, you can get a 60 day visa for about $30, and that can be exten

I saw the author used wikitravel a lot - I used to also. But now, wikivoyage is probably the preferred route. They've been adopted by Wikimedia after some drama with the company that owns wikitravel. wikitravel is now covered with ads

I definitely agree with you on potentially bringing a bigger pack. I just got back from about a year in Asia and 46L was more than enough... until I went trekking in Nepal. Then I had to get creative with lashing a daypack to the back of my

This was on reddit last night - I can't access the article, but the people in the comments on the reddit thread were having massive misconceptions about trademark vs copyright. Also, anyone can put TM next to something - it doesn'

It's hard to say since they don't expose the internals of their OS or other products, but one must assume that something interesting happened below in the surface in Windows 8 and in Windows Phone. They also manufacture the xbox360 and are

Or Romania! The company I used to work at bought a German company that had an office in Romania. When they came and did a QA with the company in the US, they listed a good M:F ratio as one of the upsides of working in the Romanian office.

I donate directly to a student group I founded for the same reason. Doing it through the University results in the University taking a cut. I just write a check directly to the organization... Or send pizza!

Massive, legacy codebase, C wrappers around new C++ functionality... to be honest I don't remember the exact reason. It mostly had to do with concurrency primitives not being initialized when they needed to be due to a lack of a way to init

I was working at Garmin - it was a mix of C and C++ on the devices. Most of Garmin's devices at the time ran Garmin's own proprietary OS, usually called GarminOS. The majority of the low level system code was written in C or ARM assembly, a

Static init/de-init order were huge issues at my last job, working on embedded devices. When I say huge, I really mean issues that would seem to come and go randomly with builds, and in some cases brick devices until someone could JTAG it a

Seems about right to me. St. Louis has a distinct accent from the rest of the state of MO and I've usually noticed that they have a bit of a twang that reminds me of Chicago.

My line of thinking was that it takes X units of effort to implement feature Y. If two companies develop competing products, then 2X units of effort have been used to accomplish 1 feature Y. If both of those companies are working on the sam

Since webkit is opensource and largely a collaborative effort, I think the monoculture will be a good thing. Instead of having multiple vendors working on multiple competing products, they can now work on multiple competing features.
