Being locked into the eco system is my main reason for avoiding Apple products. Switching from an iPhone to an Android phone was painless for me because I didn't use any of the Apple services (iMessage, iCloud, Passwords). If I had to

It's not possible to do push notifications for proprietary apps without making some requests to Google. The location services of microG support other providers and don't use Google. microG even replaces the Google map some apps in

I just noticed your requirement for no Kotlin and libraries. I'm still posting this because they are otherwise pretty simple and solid apps. Some examples available on F-Droid I've been using for a long time: - Fossify Gallery - F

F-Droid Basic, a cut down version of the official F-Droid client, supports the Android 12+ unattended app updates [1]. This allows for a store to update apps without user confirmation (if it was the store which installed (or updated?) the a

Last I used Telegram, creating an e2ee chat with someone added an encrypted chat in addition to the unencrypted chat. This means if your not careful in which chat with a single person a message is sent to it's easy to accidentally send

The crypto payments have to be manually enabled under Settings -> Payments, which is the correct way to handle such features imo.

Some banks have their own contactless payment app, which can be set as default in GrapheneOS (or any Android). Most banking apps work, as long as they use AOSP's hardware attestation feature instead of Google's SafetyNet, which re

This makes me consider using VirtualBox again. Having to install and update a kernel module is annoying. Especially on some immutable/image-based distros like Fedora Atomic.

It's highly unlikely that any F-Droid versions are going to be released by the ad-ware company. This company doesn't publish code as open source, and tibbi (original creator of SMT) is of the opinion that relicensing the code isn&

In my experience ChatGPT learns from those 11 out of date blog posts, and merges it all into a totally wrong mess. At least I didn't have much luck with solving nix problems with chatgpt.

Gesture support on iOS feels natural because it's implemented by the application (?). On Android back gestures usually aren't 1:1 because they behave like a back button. Swipe and let go, then the back action is executed. Firefox

No, F-Droid builds almost all apps from source. Even some open source apps don't make it to F-Droid if the F-Droid maintainer doesn't manage to build it themselves on their build server. Additionally, F-Droid signs every app thems

Given how many large chat systems are based on XMPP, it should be possible to select a set of standard extensions to interoperate with each other. Sadly, I don't see it happening.

I'm not so sure about email being more reliable than a phone number. I believe more people have a contract with their cellular provider than with their email. Free email accounts could be banned with no recourse.

Beeper's clients never were open source. They were based on Apache 2 licensed Element. The new client won't be open source either, given how they don't even open source their server part (contrary to their matrix bridges).

Nothing/Sunbird lied about how their bridge worked, while Beeper has an open source matrix <-> imessage bridge implementation with docs. Technically they are similar with both using macs in a server farm for their hosted offers.
