I disagree. Mathematicians care much more about notation than do musicians. Mathematical notation should be precise, concise and consistent. The hard parts of maths are the abstraction and the formalization of stuff we take for granted. In

Whatever project you choose, please fix bugs. :-) Also, if I had a business that benefited from open-source software, I'd consider donating money to one of the foundations (GNU Project, Mozilla, etc, or even Wikimedia).

From the paper "RRB-Trees: Efficient Immutable Vectors" I ended up reading about finger trees. This blog post is a very nice intro: http://apfelmus.nfshost.com/articles/monoid-fingertree.html

If I was buying a ladle on amazon, I'd maybe check the reviews (by force of habit if nothing else). But I'd feel silly asking about pros and cons of ladles at the store.

Walking to work instead of taking a bus is hard. Facing arrest for breaking an immoral law is hard. Protesting and risking arrest (or much worse) by a thuggish police is hard. Please don't tell me that changing your hosting is comparable. B

I think you're overthinking it. I'm pretty sure other people in NZ are buying the same book, the marginal impact of shipping one copy must be very close to zero. I've got a Kindle but I wouldn't trade my hardcover GEB for an electronic vers

I don't understand reddit_clone's specific example (are there bathrooms with 2 sinks?), but I think the article does mix ideas that are wins with others that are dubious. Pens, chargers and AC adapters, toilet paper are cheap; running out o

I think this could be a really interesting discussion. My first reaction to georgieporgie's comment was the same as omaranto's. But in practice, like you say, we do end up doing a lot of code re-writing. Suppose we are to explain omaranto's
