One anecdote to counter yours: when I came into Glasgow about 6 years ago, I had a few bottles of vodka with me - you're only allowed one. I asked a member of staff about it and he just said don't do it again, and waved me through. On the o

Yes and no. Making football games inaccessible to the masses would lead to revolt faster than making life difficult for people who fly. To a large extent, people who fly regularly are rather self-disciplined and have invested a lot of money

In the UK we are getting more PhD candidates than there were 10-20 years ago because the stipend that a student is paid is actually a living wage. It used to be that the PhD stipend covered the university fee only, and that to continue as a

It strikes me as a competitor to the iPad more than the Kindle. I already have an iPad, so I am not so interested in this, but I think it's a radical decision to move away from e-Ink. This strikes me as B&N giving up and admitting that

I generally just put the laptop to sleep by closing the lid. Macs are generally quite happy about that - the superb power management is one of the major selling points.

I don't understand why boot-up time is an issue for a laptop. I cannot remember the last time I rebooted my MBP; the only time it gets switched off is when I have to install security updates which is pretty rare. Using an Air as your main d

I think that you must register as being present at an institution, but I am not sure how strongly they check that information. Maybe they take your subs off if you are caught lying, but what are the chances of being caught?

It's got no data quality checks, so you need to use it with caution, but something like http://arxiv.org/list/hep-ex/recent is a really nice tool for High Energy Physics (you can see quite a few of the first results from the LHC there, fo

Spires ( http://www.slac.stanford.edu/spires/ ) is a difficult search box to use. Everyone I know uses the "Easy Search" option on that page. It's just my hunch, but if you need to have a non-default "easy" option for searching, you're prob

Cool. My problem has been finding a room for two months with an internet connection - often there's a minimum period. It's not so bad if you like living with people, but if you live alone... The idea about the net cafe is a nice one though
