I'm pretty sure Spotify does pay artists a fraction of the subscription revenue, based on the number of listens relative to other artists.

Twitter and other social media companies already heavily censor users that fall outside of the overton window (left or right). And now they have another justificiation to keep doing this, with all the buzz around deepfakes. It amazes me th

Someone shared this on HN yesterday - https://labs.tomasino.org/gnu-recutils/ It's a set of unix-style tools that let you treat text files as databases.

My cat is weirdly smart and he will play fetch. He's really good at figuring out whatever new "game" I'm trying to play with him. Some more examples of his social intelligence: - He will play tricks on me. He's l

Just as a counterpoint...I was successful throughout school and college but crashed and burned as soon as I moved to a new city for a software job at Amazon. Later, after quitting due to mental health issues I got a diagnosis for ADHD. I

I've seen some articles written by former MIT Media Lab employees, and they made it seem like Epstein's involvement and history was basically an open secret that they weren't allowed to mention in emails or documents. There w

I think this used to be more common when in the 60s and 70s, when shelters were basically run by small groups of women volunteers and relied on word-of-mouth to get the word out. A lot of shelters are now public, get funding, and have webs

I think you have to have a deep intuition about a subject area before you can easily determine if a paper is trash or not. Even then, people who are knowledgeable in some area aren't impervious to bad research.

I've never seen a begging homeless person with expensive shoes or a brand new phone. And during the winter time, most shelters are at capacity and have to turn people away. And please do some research on the foster care system in the
