How are shutters any less useful these days than before? They still provide the same exact protection from storms etc.

I don't know what kind of places you have worked in, but I have rarely bumped into disrespectful jerks as coworkers in my jobs. If you work with many jerks, maybe there is an opportunity to improve the recruitment process there.

I didn’t really interpret the essay that way. I think the essay applies as much to working hard on personal things, like becoming better at playing some instrument or painting better. Both of those take a lot of hard work, but it has nothin

The thing I mostly miss with the current .NET ecosystem is the capability of making desktop GUI applications easily on Linux.

We do! They are: - "You have overlooked this obvious thing, you idiot!", and - "Could someone explain what's wrong with the naive solution?"

Fun to see this here! I have this as a poster. It came with the Finnish computer culture magazine Skrolli back in the day. I highly recommend browsing the rest of the site too. Oona (windytan) has tons of interesting experiments and project

Then again, for every project you have to then setup vcpkg and cmake. I thoroughly enjoy that Rust comes with a build system, package manager and test framework out-of-the-box. But it is good that the situation with C++ is getting better.

Yes, Conan and vcpkg have gotten better lately, but that is a relatively recent development. Just two years ago I still had a hard time finding some common libraries with Conan. It's good that the situation is better now.

This is exactly my painpoint with C++ too. With Rust and such I'm one simple command line call away from installing a dependency. With C++ every dependency is a battle.

I think it's a huge distinction. Google's entire business is built on tracking users and serving ads based on that tracking data.

When you post stuff on HN, the visitors don't usually come in an orderly queue at the same rate for 24 hours. There is most likely a spike where most of the visitors open the site within a couple of hours, and then click around the oth

The difference between $30 and $300 headphones is significant, but the difference between $300 and $3000 headphones is likely pretty small.

In the past five years or so I haven't bumped into anyone who would use Atom. When Atom came out, it picked up some steam, but I'd say VS Code has already won that race by far.

It doesn't make much sense to look at the average population density of Finland. Homeless people don't really roam the empty countryside, they are in the cities, probably much like in the US too.
