Interesting list. One of the biggest issues for me personally is the split effort. There are >300 distributions actively maintained, 300 projects whose sole purpose it is to package the kernel and some userland-stuff to make a usable ope

We are talking about the general public, yes it is hard to use and incredibly cumbersome for those people. Imagine explaining your grandma how to use it, we are not talking about people browsing HN ;)

It's very easy to change your user agent / every type of header, you can send any string you want to a server, even an empty one. There are extensions/add-ons to very easily change your user-agent on the fly, on Firefox I can

DuckDuckGo really looses the battle when it comes to search results. And since they make the case with privacy, I also want to make clear, they don't loose because Google tracks us all, even if you are logged out from your account, use

See also my other comment, I changed my opinion on that. What I originally thought about were systems like NixOS (for serious development), or something more minimalistic that offers greater control like Slackware, a *BSD (Jails, byhyve, dt

I actually have thought about it some more and gave Ubuntu a spin and now I am 100% with you. Might seem a little weird, this "sudden" change of heart, but yes, you are right. If I am honest, I spend 90% of my time in a terminal,

When it comes to Google and Data Collection just always assume the worst. Not to bash on Google, I am no hater, but it's what they make money with. Browser for free? Google Mail with 15 GB of storage? We all know their business model.

I wonder why this got so many votes to be honest, it's from May 2014 and as far as why one would want to try FreeBSD it is not very detailed. That being said: I use FreeBSD and (obviously) prefer it, but: 1) ZFSonLinux has made huge st
