Everyone always argues “the universe is so big there must be aliens”. But as soon as you ask why aliens don’t act like us, it becomes “the universe is too small to have that kind”! I think the heuristic is just fine.

I would also like to add that Fermi’s paradox doesn’t assume humans are interesting, it just assumed probes are cheap. If probes can easily and cheaply be made to cover the galaxy (and we know that this is possible even without major breakt

It was super frustrating to see the author dismiss Dykstra’s argument as an appeal to authority. No it isn’t, it just means that we find the arguments he outlined compelling. As someone who switches between C and FORTRAN daily, it’s incredi

No way, if I read that link suddenly I’d be culpable! Also I just lost the game. But from my reading I think this order only applies to business regulations, so you might want to delay your next bird feather gathering party.

I need to get a check list for the ever so popular criticisms of academia article. This one surely would hit plenty of boxes: scientists don’t pay attention to industry, researchers only care about grants, etc. It’s a lot of words just to s

I agree. Many political topics are very complex, and it is hard to independently form opinions on them. Humans rely on fallacious shortcuts all the time when making decisions, otherwise we’d be paralyzed. We would see people switching their

Well farewell to any hacker news readers in Poland. That is, unless the administrators are willing to restore any comment here at the whim of a foreign court.

The USA currently has nine million active cases. I actually think at this point if you have cold symptoms it may be more likely you have covid than a common cold. (Though maybe someone has data in cold cases to clarify the cross over point)

The linked post celebrates this saying they can share this data with law enforcement, but is it legal for them to pursue cases based on the evidence found in stolen data?

I just opened up google maps and zoomed in on a random town: Mt. Pleasant Iowa. If I search it on google, on the top of the page is a snippet from Wikipedia. The top result is a link to Wikipedia. The second is the actual town website. This

How does it work now with copyleft licenses? If I gpl my code, does that no longer apply after the same number of years as a copyrighted work? How does the law handle a continually evolving code base?

There are a lot of rumors right now that the president will spin up his own media service after leaving office. He even hinted at that in his last tweets. Parler recent troubles is maybe opening up a space for him. But I’m curious what step

To me this is the flaw in the article. The T-3 situation was only hard because it wasn’t clear if it was land or sea. But I don’t see why this should be a problem in space, just consider it the high seas.
