I don’t think there is a strong case to be made that the CEO matters much here. We’d need to see the counterfactual of what would have happened in her absence. Maybe the same, maybe better, maybe worse. And in any case, there is no reason t

The best way use case I can think of is to view my own feed anonymously. It’s all public information (whom I follow etc) so I should not need to be auth’d.

In terms of $$, by far the biggest cost is in the wasted time of the millions of people who are subjected to this. It's obviously in the billions.

As I mentioned in another comment, the incentives here draw from the protections that derive from several levels of prohibition: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11650108

The problems derive from the prohibition, which takes several forms. The forms add up for big profits and bad incentives, for which the consumer pays. FDA approval is the first layer of prohibition. Very expensive, this keeps a lot of compe

Cute. Could this be implemented as a compiler optimization for saving allocations?

Attributing a person’s preferences to identity is just ad hominem. That doesn’t even imply it’s wrong or mean-spirited; it just means that it’s “preferable” to talk about a person’s motives. Very Kahneman.

Awesome article. The countdown clocks are generally accurate, but in certain situations they are surprisingly off. I would love to see someone use this data to improve arrival predictions – a regression, say, based on features such as time

Similar to another commenter’s note about Raspberry Pi, this seems like an argument that an well-supported, and ideally open, OS is the way to go for devices. Android comes to mind, even iOS would be unlikely to leave customers in a lurch.

It will be a very interesting study for future generations, should we substantially legalize recreational drugs, on all of the follow-on effects. For example, many categories of police activity (raids, traffic stops) will become harder to j

Bureaucracy of this sort begins with the belief that systems are designed a priori by rules. I am sure that most of the personnel policies that the author alludes to are well-meaning and intuitive. What is out of scope in such rule-making
