Yep. A lot of this thread feels like I’m being gaslit into believing the M1 machines were not the ridiculously huge jumps we all knew they were at the time. I don’t really care about benchmarks, these things have allowed me to do twice the

macOS heavily caches basically everything; it’s allergic to unused memory. If there’s space it’ll find something to put there in the off chance it’s useful. You really have to go off memory pressure, not the naive used/free numbers.

I love how this reads completely differently after the final sentence implies the birds are still alive.

I hear people say this, but the fact is my workflow “fits” on an 8GB M1 and doesn’t fit on an 8GB Intel machine. By “fits” I mean “is usable enough that I think about my work, not my machine” So I really don’t care what anyone says, there i

To strengthen this even more - I have an 8GB M1 Air that I use for development when I don’t want to carry my 64GB M1 Max machine somewhere. My usual dev stack is a few Docker containers, PHPStorm and RubyMine (at the same time, don’t ask…),

Headline is a bit unclear, I initially thought it was talking about being awake and showing other people what happened in your dream, like a theatre production. Turns out, it’s just (what non scientists would see as) sleepwalking.

No, those come from ground reporting stations which feed into a whole bunch of sources - online stuff will give it to you including Foreflight, or just key up the ATIS and listen for a few seconds. Or ask a controller.

Can anyone explain why naively adding cost to every link in the graph doesn’t work? I.e if my graph had costs ranging from -10 to +10, I would add 11 to each and now the costs are +1 to +21… why doesn’t that work? Obviously it must not, but

The difference is that the SWE probably has to maintain the software. The contractor just needs their work to fail not-before the warranty period expires. Think of them more like foreign software contractors being paid per JIRA ticket, rath

It’s this kind of thing that causes some people to take Tesla’s side by default in discussions here soon after crashes. It’s not “Elon worship”, it’s Bayesian statistics… Yesterday, there were people here blaming “Tesla brakes are too small

My guess is that very sentence would be used as evidence in court - “see, even they don’t think they have enough to win!” Leverage in court, so it’d be used to lessen payouts.

I’m always surprised it isn’t standard practice to issue credit cards with no numbers and no mag stripe, for use at restaurants and other card-present transactions. Apple did part of this with their card - no numbers for waitstaff to copy -

But trespassing laws do exist, as do airspace laws. I agree it’s an over-application of the law, but it’s not a law that doesn’t exist. Like if I broke into Walmart and road a purple bike around while shooting stuff with a flamethrower, I

I’d argue that it’s a fine use of time to make murder illegal again every 15-20 years. That would help avoid the ridiculous “20 years in prison and a $1500 fine”-type laws that exist everywhere (made back when $1500 was a fortune). In my st
