The really scary (or even shady) part to me isn't a complete outage, but a controlled selective one - where some functions become unavailable to some people. That creates massive opportunities for abuse.

Secret of success: buy low, sell high. Unless you are a Coinbase customer (because they will selective disable your ability to act when prices move quickly). I've witnessed it at least a dozen time personally, and stopped trading altog

wouldn't it be more accurate to say "wallets"? I am sure many of these are owned by large groups of people.

Re: "When you buying Bitcoins they go to your wallet and you can verify the transaction on blockchain.info." Not necessarily. For example you can trade on GDAX (between ETH/BTC/LTC/USD) without hitting the blockcha

I think the parent comment was referencing "wash trades", where you trade between your own accounts to create an illusion of active trading (or movement up or down - whatever your objective may be). Currently this is very easy to

Tracking won't accomplish much, they run transactions through mixers/tumblers, and you quickly lose track. Here's the money from the NiceHash hack two weeks ago (or "hack") getting moved out, in plain sight: https:

I remember the days when adding the word "e-commerce" to your penny stock had the same effect. Good times.

Over last couple of weeks, I received a dozen or so contact requests on LinkedIn from "Blockchain and ICO experts". They don't have any other verifiable jobs on their resumes.

In my case, I sent some ETH to "my" ETH wallet at Coinbase, received an email from Coinbase alerting me of the incoming transfer, and then - nothing, that ETH is nowhere to be found except on the blockchain (it's not showing

I noticed the recent micro transactions (0.0001 BTC) into the wallet, following the alleged heist. Any ideas?

They are very well funded, and they can afford scalability. It's not that hard, given the number of transactions even at peak so far. So yeah, I find these weird circuit breaker patterns suspicious. The worst part is "partial&quo

I was wondering the same thing about GDAX/Coinbase. I've been seeing "partial" outages both on their portal and their API side. Partial outages are the worst, as they only leave 'some' of the participants unabl

I think Warren Buffet also questioned Bitcoin a few years ago, will try to find that reference. I also just remembered that I questioned it too on Twitter, after seeing some hype from Andreessen, and he promptly blocked me.

Yes, amateur hour all around - it's almost as though random individuals with limited tech experience are allowed to mess with a production system. But, this is exciting and fun, and I feel good things will emerge from this eventually.

Interesting analysis. What I always find interesting about these crypto incidents is how quiet everyone is, including the parties that end up "losing" significant amounts irreversibly. There's never an investigation.
