It's an insulting term for scruffy looking people who are presumed to be homeless or drug-using. The reason it's contentious is that one person uses it, someone else objects to it, people take sides along left-vs-right lines, and

Downvoters, I wasn't being snarky, this is a genuine question. This whole subthread is baffling to me. I read through the thread[0] from yesterday as well, and I see a lot of people who seem to intuitively assume this is really bad,

This seems a) completely irrelevant to the topic, and b) almost completely irrelevant, full stop. Why is anyone supposed to care that a mod on /r/EarthPorn is also a mod on /r/Movies? Is /u/Cyxie pushing a si

Thanks for writing this. All of the stuff about urbit being a cult or a scam that comes up every time it's discussed here seems orthogonal to what actual urbit enthusiasts care about, which is just that it performs a use case we actua

Why would they change the name? Who would it fool? I mean, Yarvin left; that's a pretty substantive change. Anyone who isn't mollified by it isn't going to be mollified by a superficial one.

In a word, no. Single urbit identities can be gotten for free (just show some interest and ask for one), but the only people selling them are people who bought them as investments.

Here's my attempt: if a smartphone is a thing that's designed to facilitate the development of secure, robust, powerful client-side software, Urbit is the server-side equivalent. It is (or, aspires to be) the thing in which you c

My Dad was (I was 6 and would tag along), in 1980-84 or so. It was a group of ~20 other guys, probably the only other Atari 800 owners in a 50-mile radius. They would get together once a month to show off new peripherals, pore over type-i
