This happens with local files also, and was originally called “DLL hell”. The mismatch isn’t malicious, but the effect is the same.

Paul McCartney deliberately avoided learning how to read music, but he understands music theory just fine. They are two different skills. It's quite clear from The Beatles' music that they know about keys, chords, etc. For example

How is that "fake"? There's no requirement that an open source project take contributions from outsiders at all.

I think one can make a rational argument that the cost of the lockdowns was not worth the lives saved. I probably wouldn't agree with that argument, but I'd certainly hear it out, especially with regard to the impact on children&#

I'll tell you what: I'll admit that one side has put too much emphasis on the freedom to choose one's sexual identity if you'll admit that the other side has put too much emphasis on resisting such choices.

I'm happy to have this discussion, but I think you're making a false equivalence between the two sides. The examples you provided of liberal scientific overreach are either false or exaggerated. On the other side, you have an anti

FWIW, I agree with you. It was an absurd comment, but it shouldn't have been flagged (and I wasn't the one who flagged it).

Give me a freaking break. One side is carrying on the Enlightenment ideals of rationality and secular humanism, while the other is trying to drag us back to the dark ages of superstition and fear. It has nothing to do with political “left”

Meanwhile DOGE has cancelled more than $2 billion in federal research grants. The US is shooting itself in the foot when it should be competing at its best. https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/nih-layoffs-budget-cuts-

Agreed. It’s amusing to see procedural programmers slowly rediscovering what functional programmers have known for years. Paul Graham called this “The Blub Paradox”.

Current LLM’s are based on multi-character tokens, which means they don’t know how to spell well. As a result, they are horrible at spelling games like this or, say, Hangman.

This is an excellent talk by Scott Aaronson, although it's not something that can be digested as quickly as the typical HN post. The summary slide at the end is perhaps a good introduction to the scope of the topic: * In math, we are f

So what exactly is being alleged here? That these DOGE bros wrote and used “hacker” code from GitHub to bypass security limitations on NLRB data? Why would they even need to do that if they had superuser accounts in the system already?
