Treating ordinal ratings (1-5) as nominal labels is not the best solution, IMO. It's true that the "distance" between each rating is not equal, however disregarding the fact that 4 stars is greater than 3 looses quite a bit of useful inform

AWS is not without it's "cool" storage: SimpleDB, S3, RDS. Not to mention, being within AWS with full control of your machines, you can setup any database you'd like.

I could see one running out of inodes for a sizable dataset. Also, this seems like it would incur a good deal of iowait opening and closing all those fds.

You can do pretty neat things with indexes and regexp queries. The mongo-search project is also pretty cool (does Porter stemming, indexing, etc). That said, if you need powerful "full-text searching" I would look to something like Lucene o

Absolutely. Also, always use "var" in your variable declarations. I can't count how many times a scope issue bit me in the ass b/c of a missing "var"

I would think that any CDN would support gzipping, assuming you can set the content headers explicitly.

Assuming he doesn't care for the money, it seems like this waste of an opportunity to help some people - and rather selfish. Perhaps the Clay institute will do something good with the money (scholarships?)

Personally, I would still put some caching in front of a document db. Either something in the application (memcache), or something in front of the web service (varnish, squid)

Well, I can say that Python pays better and in general leads to more interesting work (rather than PHP that is). I imagine Ruby is similar. However, I think Python is a better investment all around.
