Thank you for following up. The first point dosen’t really do anything for me because I did cite California as one of many US states holding a referendum. The 2nd point is a more interesting debate and it may involve some preference. For my

I think you are confounding a few things. In Switzerland you have 4 referendums a year where the demos, the people, make decisions in concert. In most republics, all you get to do is elect a representative. Some US states do hold referendum

Switzerland is not an inclusive place. It is a democracy.

It is quite proudly a Republic with Democratic characteristics. The only democracy is Switzerland. Switzerland solves the problem of populist tyrannical capture by having an Executive Council instead of a President. More recently, I’ve com

Branding, intellectual property, are important but…the most important thing to protect is taste. In this regard the US is so far off the mark (and so chemically manufactured) as to cheapen the expensive and flavorful foods Europe continues

I learned Objective-C this year and I love it. It is a fantastic language to use because the tradeoff is obviously evident in the language. You can use Smalltalk for a day. Understand the history. Understand the compromise. And Objective-C

Yes, but wouldn’t they still end up at a startup? Pay is lower, stress is higher. Working not living rules the day.

Dude. It’s a failed kitchen sink. We Chat was both my bank and my Amazon. I kept money on it and was the best way to go to the store. Heck—I even used WeChat as my Uber (Didi) because I didn’t have a Chinese card and the in-app WeChat app b

I did implement a webserver (that supports websocket-a binary protocol) and also implemented a `make_binary_string` function along the wah so as to not lose my bearings. Printf is 100% amazing and I generally leave my printf statements insi

Nicely done. A few months ago, I implemented a WebSocket server from scratch and would have loved to see this before doing so. It really is all just 0 s and 1s coming down the pipes.

There is some sort of devirtualization that might bypass it. When they announced, Twitter was going crazy about how it might kill ObjC dynamism. However, what I was to was that you can store the method in a variable, and call it directly, t

Pretty much every method call, unless it is optimized—will go through `objc_msgSend`. The runtime looks up the code for a particular object using `objc_msgSend.` The function signature varies depending on how many parameters the method has

The only thing that stops me from doing it that there is a well established pattern of passing `&error` which tells me that the function can error and that I could handle it. I’m sort of looking for what 2nd order and systemics effects

Thank you for such a thoughtful answer! I did ask the question on Twitter. :) Not entireley convinced but I’m certainly looking forward to using it. One more thing—how would you do error handling? Thinking out loud here: it would be nice if

Maybe it has to do with coherence of objects as collections of functions and the fact that they contain state. I love objects and talking about them as living creatures. :) They’re sort of like functions that include a long set of parameter
