This may be just the TechCrunch blurb, but if they really want to be the WordPress of social networks, using Rails will be a problem for them. Part of the success of WP is that it uses PHP and MySQL, two technologies that are ubiquitous, an

The general perception seems to be that "SAP is expensive, difficult to implement and often doesn't work". At least, that's what a SAP sales person said in a speech he gave at an event for SAP implementation partners.

What's missing from this rant is evidence. The author comes accross one incompetent programmer from Argentina and then goes off to state that Asians and Argentin[i?]ans have the wrong mindset to be a developer? It may be true that $20 an ho

You'd think that, but about three years ago the Dutch minister of education (Maria van der Hoeven) suggested ID should be taught in schools as well. I was flabbergasted.

The bad thing about doers is that they're scarce. And not just in the business world either. Talkers are everywhere and it annoys the * out of me. (btw - while it's true that you can spot doers and talkers from miles away, I know one guy -

Amazing how short the memory of science journalists can be. This is old news. As you'll find out if you do a quick google: http://www.google.com/search?q=humanity%20near%20extinction A lot of the results are older than, well, last week. I

Not that I'm an expert on the celebrity chef restaurant business or anything, but I can name one example where this is at least partly true: Ferran Adria's El Bulli (voted best restaurant in the world a few years ago) actually operates at a

With due respect, but I don't think storing an MD5-ed password in a user cookie is a smart thing to do. It's probably safer to store a session id or somesuch.

I've looked at it on occasion as well, and while it's not exactly a work of art, it's not exactly terrible either, especially for an open source blogging product. If you really want terrible code, take a look at Pivot. That's awful . WP is

For some reason lyrics don't bother me that much. It's probably part of the same mechanism that makes it impossible for me to remember lyrics, whether they're in my native language or English. To my ears the human voice is just another inst

In really stressful situations, old hardcore or punk (that I know really well so I won't actively listen to it) helps me get things done. But usually it's just post rock or techno or something else that's kind of boring and instrumental.

Possibly. But less ambitious: it's actually not a bad way (I think - I don't know enough about JQuery to have an idea about the performance of this) to do client side filtering of data presented in tables. His technique, at least, is more r

Commendable as this is: it's of course a lot easier for employees you think highly of than employees you dislike or with whom things simply didn't work out: "I'm letting go Bob. Bob is an ok coder, but it didn't really work out with him. Bo

With a steamer you're still working with water so some aromatics will probably get lost. A better alternative to microwaving would be stir-frying as you coat your vegetables in oil so no aromatics would leak out.

Cooking eggs can take 10 minutes (start from cold water, then at 10 minutes the yolk is semi-solid), but to do it properly you need 20 minutes to half an hour at least. At 62 - 68 degrees centrigrade, that is. If the temperature gets any
