This hits the nail on the head. Alexander has a horror of power struggles and wants to believe they can all be rplaced with debate, but that simply doesn't work. He addresses this somewhat meta-level issue in his posts on Conflict vs.

I'm in general an admirer of Bateson (and Stewart Brand), but the Double Bind theory is crap and not taken seriously any more. Schizophrenia is an organic brain disease with genetic and probably other material causes; it's not cau

There hasn't been much written on the Lisp Machines that I know of. Alan Kay's History of Smalltalk might be a good place to start, the LispM owed a lot to earlier work done at PARC: http://worrydream.com/EarlyHist

I founded the mailing list the book was based on. These days I say, Unix went from being the worst operating system available, to being the best operating system available, without getting appreciably better. (which may not be entirely accu

Mindstorms is not about technology, it is about a particular approach to learning (constructionism) that happens to mesh very well with interactive computation. See http://namodemello.com.br/pdf/tendencias/situatin

The article doesn't mention this, but after some poking around it appears that the interactive demo is written in Morphic, the Smalltalk successor that Alan Kay and colleagues have been working on for the last couple of decades.

I invite all the Fox News viewers and others who take this BS seriously to move out of this hellhole and go to states with a higher quality of life rank such as Mississippi (#6) or Arkansas (#7), and send us a postcard so we can be jealous.

A survey on a self-selected group is kind of worthless. Eg, their results show a plurality of libertarians, which may be the case in reality but is much more likely to be an effect of libertarians being more likely to take the time to fill

Nice title, although I don't think the proposed solution (formal proof methods) is the answer. My own view is that building software is more of a design process than an engineering process, for the simple reason that software rarely ha

In Clojure it's #(+ 2 %), pretty compact if cryptic. Actually no reason you couldn't make a reader macro in CL to look similar.

I think you are homing in on a key philosophical difference between me and LessWrongsters. Don't really have time to get into it now, except to say that it is kind of arrogant to think you can design or think about superintelligences w

The fact that it hasn't happened yet is good evidence that it isn't as easy as all that. Also, evolution optimizes for survival and reproduction, not intelligence. While it may be possible to design an artificial evolutionary syst

As a Lisp hacker, I am somewhat stunned to learn that the world suffers from too much Lisp philosophy and that Lisp is unmathematical. Not to mention that Eric Raymond is a spokesman for Lisp. Actually there is a somewhat valid and interest

Yes good modularity is the essence of what I was calling good design. The point was that Lisp has better tools for achieving good modularity.
