Left over Up over UpperLeft for Paeth That's a,b,c when your pixels are labeled c b a d the same order you write the predictor p = a+b-c.

Though, it does seem like anyTrue() and allTrue() are pretty non trivial on ARM with NEON. Those functions seem pretty geared towards x86 movemask/ptest instructions. I'd think those would have to be compound, if not serial, on

I'd argue most SIMD hardware instruction sets do support that. x86 has had pshufb since SSSE3 (most desktop+laptop, and ~all mobile x86), providing an arbitrary byte shuffle across 16 bytes, and NEON has vtbl, pretty much the same but

Last time I profiled Go code on a Mac, I just ran my binary as normal under Instruments. Seemed to work fine.

Sort of. Thumb requires that you use an 'it' instruction before a block of up to 4 conditional instructions. Think "if-then". You can make each instruction a 'then' or an 'else' by instruction vari

On a related note, if you're using new and delete you can simply delete a pointer-to-const without jumping through any const_cast hoops, though I often wish I had a way of blocking that for APIs where the callee doesn't take owner

Am I missing something, or isn't 1.6 * 2^-4 = 1.6 / 16 = 0.1? Seems exact to me.

Amazing. I've always wanted exactly this, and now I have it: bind right:alt push right bar-resize:screenSizeX/2 bind left:alt push left bar-resize:screenSizeX/2 bind up:alt push left bar-resize:screenSizeX*2/3 bind down:alt

Every time I read the headline for a fast algorithm for inverse square root I think "Well, yeah, you just multiply the input by itself. Can't get much faster to undo a square root than that." Silly me.

I just took a look at the output of gcc on -O1,-O2,-O3,and -Os (using the -S flag to output assembler.) It appears that with -O1 or -Os enabled, gcc turns the double recursion into single recursion. This makes the algorithm scale O(n) inste

A multiple of 24 like, say, 120? I'd always thought that 120Hz TVs were being pushed because 120 is a multiple of both 24 and 30.

For something that simply works without any painful hacks, Android 2.2+ has a built-in WiFi hotspot feature. Turn it on and you've got a personal WiFi network that goes out to the world over your mobile's data connection. I've used it for

And last I looked, that's how Chrome/Linux works too, at least on Ubuntu. When you download and install the deb, it'll set up apt sources so you get updates through the system.

I'd always thought that a log-structured filesystem is uniquely suited to spinning rust drives, as it never has to seek its head---it just keeps writing.

It gets fantastically huge when you look at quoted searches. Sure, you can build an index of key words to documents containing them, but how do you build an index for literal text searches like "to the bridge, he said"?
