It seems that the WSJ article is talking about http referrer headers. If you happened to click a link from your profile page, then the referrer header points to that page.

I would start attending a user group. Linux, Java, functional programming if you can find one, any group with users that are passionate about technology outside of work. At the very least, you should be able to find like minded people.

I've found maven to be useful. It standardizes the layout for the majority of java based projects. It also lets me deal with dependencies in a decent manner. Maven should not be downloading dependencies on every build unless you are using S
