Note that there are many reasons for why anecdotes don't count as evidence. I thought that I felt euphoria the first time I took codeine (but I honestly wasn't sure). I have taken codeine since and was never able to replicate that

Actually, I remembered that there are relevant results from clinical studies that are available. Here are the side effects of OxyContin.[1] (Euphoria is considered a side effect.) The most commonly-reported side effects were constipation, n

I believe you. I don't think the buzz would happen consistently if you tried to replicate it over and over. It could have been your anxiety going away, or it could have been the placebo effect. One could easily resolve the question of

If you were given narcotics in the hospital, then there must have been a reason. I said that if you have pain, and the drug takes it away, it feels good.

The "euphoria" is situational. It's like alcohol. Drinking alone is usually not much fun.

"Narcotic" means numbing, and that's an accurate description IMO. Reports of euphoria are exaggerated. It feels good if you are feeling pain or malaise and it takes the pain or malaise away. Otherwise it doesn't feel lik

In the case of Steve Jobs, his predictions were things that he did himself. I think what youre saying is that he predicted what a good cell phone would look like. I'm not sure that's really salient to my point.

There are many tasks related to programming that would be maximally hard for computers. It would be kind of like a gordian knot of all the intractable problems in AI all woven together.

In the 90s, I thought that there wasn't much software left to write. It turned out that there was. I don't want to be glib, but I think it's always hard to imagine the things that haven't been created yet.

It's not only cases where the requirements are especially hard to elicit. Computers don't have common sense, so even "obvious" things would be hard.

I meant infinite in the sense that there will never come a time when the human race stops making art because there's none left to make.

Actually, if you consider programs that can be considered art, like video games, that may create an infinite demand for programmers, because the demand for art is infinite. In art, the fact that something has never been done before can be t

The demand for new programs will not abate unless people stop thinking of new things to do with computers. The number of useful things that a computer could do might be infinite -- or it might not. We're unlikely to ever hit that point

I know that weight makes a big difference when shipping parts or complete machines. So the cost of shipping magnifies when you use heavier materials.

I've thought about this, and I don't think that making all data persistent is necessarily a good idea. Programs tend to crash and corrupt their volatile memory. If you want some data to be reliable and permanent, you have to treat

The key here seems to be that performance does not drop off very much under load. DRAM cache hides latency, but only up to a point. Hiding latency is like a magic trick, and you can only hide so much before the trick starts to break down.

It almost seems like the message of NA was maliciously designed to induce hopelessness and defeatism, the exact opposite of what would help a person who needs optimism and confidence to make a change that might seem scary.

Oh, I get it. There was probably no efficient way to move the cursor around with the keyboard. That might explain why users said the keyboard was faster. It was faster for them to push the right buttons. They might have found the mouse cumb

I don't understand what task the users were doing when the mouse was discovered to be faster. The keyboard and mouse are not generally interchangeable; the task will generally favor one or the other. I'm assuming that the users we
