Bethany McLean is the best in business writing. The Smartest Guys in the Room was fantastic. As for Microsoft: the adage goes that success has many fathers. Failure has even more. It would have been nothing short of amazing if Microsoft was

That seems relevant. I have a feeling that it's not that people hadn't noticed the pattern followed by the moon (people knew a lot about the sky back then, apparently, probably because people looked at it more and more carefully s

There are names for these different gaits in horses[1]. The difference between the natural and unnatural running motions seems to be exactly equivalent to the difference between a trot and a pace. [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/

That occurred to me, too. Also, it would be easier to draw the unnatural pose. For one, it straightens out the body. Two, you can have a model stand in the unnatural pose, because it's stable. Once the masters used this pose, it would

We have control in principle, and, in practice, if the public was energized enough about this it would get done. It's just that the bar is set extremely high and it's almost unthinkable what abuses might need to occur to get that

The DEA has no purpose other than to enforce drug laws. The public has consistently shown that it wants drug laws to be more liberal, but to the DEA, that's an existential threat. The DEA has a vested interest in the drug police state.

It seems like in high school you're more likely to miss out on recent history than have too much. Recent history is at the very end of the textbook/class and you're lucky if it doesn't get cut.

Banks frustrate me, and I don't think there is any technological excuse. I suspect the systems are antiquated and they are not motivated to change. They use security as a cover for their slowness.
