Good point about Francis Bacon – that didn't occur to me and, for my own uses, I might be able to drive out the mental associations by fixating on Sir Francis.

It really disappoints me when good projects are given names that trigger bad mental associations. Sure, everybody loves bacon – except vegans, vegetarians, Jews, and other swine-shunning cultures – but I really don't want to be thinking abo

I feel I should write about this somewhere else with proper justification, but something I've observed is that design culture is not an intellectual culture to the extent that programming culture is. Having gone to school on the same floo

Great advice. The most important thing to understand about life is that you don't know what you don't know! Put negatively, if you're not interested in further educating yourself outside of your direct interest areas, understand that you wi

Go ahead and read Understanding Media while you're at it: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0262631598/ref=as_li_ss_tl?... ! Incredibly insightful book, totally transformed my understanding of the world.

I recently read Douglas Coupland's biography of Marshall McLuhan: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1935633163/ref=as_li_ss_tl?... After having read some of McLuhan's work, which provides theories that explain much of the effect informatio

I always wonder about the use of the word "neu", is it meant to be pronounced "noi" as in German, or "new" as it might be phonetically pronounced in English?

As a student, I shouldn't have to know about complex citations rules while writing a paper. There are a few tools that take care of this, but they are either non-free (EasyBib), non-comprehensive (other online generators) or require that yo

Strange indeed that they use the word "Tweet" when there are many other microblogging services, including Facebook. How does one cite Status.net?

I would love it if somebody could register a domain and create a canned reply that we could copy paste when asked to review papers with appropriate links to all relevant open access projects.

Agree this is very much in order. Especially responsive design tools are badly needed. Keynote with a good blank theme and extra chrome hidden has been the closest I've come to adequate. And if you don't require perfect comps you can ditch

You say two things: "meditation shouldn't have anything to do with a financial worry" I disagree with this in principle. Meditation is very much a habit and I think it's quite possible to incentivize developing the habit without somehow 'ta

There is not. And honestly I don't think it's a must have. It's certainly a beautiful book, but you can learn most of what you need to know about grids just by Googling around. Typography is a comparatively much more complex topic, warranti
