Related, there are various indian companies that offer the virtual equivalent, but I've never signed up because of: a) worries about cultural fit b) they all seem to make the signup process that little bit too painful c) there's always a sl

Thought from last night - we need a HN "problem registry". Not that new software ideas are hard to come by, but it'd be interesting to build up a list of specific pain points with eg) email.

Another good trick is that if you want to comment privately on someone else's email, always forward, never reply. That way you reduce the risk of accidentally emailing it to the person you're talking about.

True, true, I was just reacting to the "this is the only market segment anyone is ever allowed to go for" tone.

I agree with you in that it could be a good market segment to go for, but I think there's a lot of potential value in other market segments. For example, the ISP I use targets technical users, and they seem to be doing quite nicely.

I came here to say something similar. I think all this labelling as "normal" / "other" is unhealthy, because it leads to unexamined associations about the group, and thoughts like "the 'normal' people are morally better, anyone with differe

Posted seeing as the other RFS discussion seems to be more about the meaning of the iPad and whether it's a good idea. Hoping we can get a more focused discussion on how to extract cash.

I can believe the iPad will do well in this market, but I don't believe apple gave it more than a tiny amount of thought when designing the thing. Apple are all about mass consumer markets, it'd be totally out of character for them to desig

I'm looking for a new todo list tool at the moment. How would it work for a vaguely GTD style?

If you got a different response, like "Hi, XYZ Corp, what extension would you like?", it might be politeish. Of course anyone being quite that manual has probably now been replaced by a PBX.

Interesting. Looks more mac specific than I was thinking. My musings on interesting areas: * I don't care about IMAP/POP/all that stuff. Mail comes in via SMTP, goes out via SMTP. * Messages go straight into postgres * There's gold in them

I know this is in some ways a claim to be smarter than google, but I always feel like email clients just aren't up to it. I have some fuzzy ideas on better webmail I plan to experiment with one day.

The bit that has surprised and interested me with usesthis.com is how few people they've talked to use Linux, and how many people use OS X. I mean, I knew OS X was big in the geek market, I just didn't quite realise it was this popular.

I may be an unusual case of convergence, but I find both the iPad AND what the FSF say relevant. I really like the ease of use of something like an iPad whilst getting concerned about the long term consequences for my data.
