I'd recommend anything by Simon Winchester. He writes interesting non-fiction books and reads them for the audio versions. Just this morning on my drive into work I finished "The Men Who United the States: America's Explorers

This is very true. I live in the country and my house is about 100-feet off a rural highway with a 65-mph speed limit. Being Texas, most folks are going a bit faster. One of my neighbors has a Tesla. It's no quieter at these speeds tha

We do. In the continental US there's three independent grids: East, West, and Texas. There's some interchange of power between the grids with DC ties, but it's pretty minimal capacity-wise.

No better than anyone else here really. The sad reality is that often these status pages are manually updated by the service teams themselves and when there's an issue you're busy trying to fix the problem, not update the status p

Transmission losses over large distances are high. And long distance transmission infrastructure is expensive. High Voltage DC (HVDC) is very expensive. The holy grail in transmission is high temperature super conductors. We're not the

I was actually in the Austin office most of the time but spent a lot of time at "The Castle" (as they call the SA headquarters). Texas is a bit different and SA is that plus more. It's hot. ;) Austin is great, though, and I s

Take it from someone that used to work there -- it's horrific. The noise level is unbelievable. All the technical folks live in their noise-canceling headphones all day.

Well, yeah, on paper it's $2/month/mailbox, but there's a $10 a month minimum, so it's really at least $120 a year. Fastmail is really $40 a year for their "Enhanced" plan and you can pay it in 5-year chun

It didn't last. The tone of the place changed radically after Walker left and Bartz came in. But, to be fair, it was probably inevitable. Once an organization get beyond a certain size it's bound to change. Still, it can't be
