In practice what it means is that if you're about to crash into something, and you hit the brakes, that it hits them 100% right off the bat, instead of the 50% or 80% that most people would go for. I've not used the system in the Prius, but

I've had the radar-assist cruise control for two years (complete with braking) and everything, and I view it as a first step towards automated driving. People aren't likely to accept automated driving (even if it's statistically safer than

Exactly. And even when the person does manage to speak in a perfect soundbite, they're often talking to somebody who isn't an expert, and it might well get screwed up during transcription, writing or editing. The first time I talked to a r

Agreed. If I want to encourage somebody to sit in a chair for 8-12 hours a day, it's reasonable for me to spend $1k on that chair. Even if I said the chairs were getting replaced every three years, it'd be a pittance. The comfort would ne

Having spoke with the press, I give him a lot of latitude on that one. There are lots of explanations that come to my mind before I'd assume he's clueless.

Yes. Hugely. It needs to be easily legible, and you need a clear call to action color. I'd suggest looking at successful sites that serve your target market, and looking at what colors they use. I'm guessing you'll find lots of black/blue

I started running ssh on port 443 when public ssh is required, because it works more reliably when traveling. A nice side effect is that it also avoids the Rumplestiltskin attacks. That said, my preferred solution is openvpn.

My online cash winrate dropped to 1/3 of what it was in the "salad" days, and my variance increased substantially. My understanding is that my winrates are still very good, but the rise of massive-multi-tablers and HUDs really ruined the ga

I am one. I play mid/high stakes poker, and pretty much every form of it. I funded my first startup by playing nights and weekends. These days, it's solely an avocation, but one I rather enjoy.

Well, I sent them email asking what they need for power/bandwidth/rackspace, to add a node usefully. I doubt I'm the only person on HN who has large amounts of computing resources to spare. I suppose we'll see what's required to help.

I have an '08 Mercedes SL55, and a scangauge. The scanner cost $170. The codes are read through the standard obd2 port. It wouldn't be surprising if the dealerships have fancier diagnostics available via $40k machines, but they're in no w

I'm a self-interested creature. I tend to stop sharing with the Internet when my expertise gets far enough to the right of the mean that the information flow becomes unidirectional, or near unidirectional. I doubt I'm alone in that.

The story conflates timelines, as does the discussion. It makes it hard to take any of it seriously. For the vast majority of the time that those products were sold, the mechanism for profit was to keep a piece of the highest risk (and hig

There is no reason whatsoever to suppose they didn't know these CDO's were rubbish. The fact that they held on to the highest risk portion of them as their intended means of profiting from the sale is pretty solid evidence.

Bad idea. Central bank independence is negatively correlated to inflation as well as variance of inflation. As such, a situation such as the United States has (with a fairly independent central bank) tends to be quite good both at reducin

If I slam on my brakes for an emergency (animal in road, accident ahead, etc.), I can stop from 60mph in approximately 110-120 feet. That's not that far from a magically appearing brick wall. At 60mph, you'll cover the whole of that distan
