I actually see lack of H.264 support as more of a blow for those desktop browsers than anything else. With both Firefox and Chrome on the desktop refusing to support the video codec preferred by most (non-PC) device vendors, and both mobile

Processing is a graphics language that gives you a great abstraction for writing time-based animations with useful primitives. Neither Canvas nor SVG provide the same high-level starting point, meaning it takes more effort to achieve the sa

I don't really agree with the author's proposal, although it is well explained. As many others pointed out, Google's usability was (and maybe still is) much better than the others. Another big point in Google's favour is how their maps loo

This article almost solely focuses on how the new price point of $99 makes the AppleTV more attractive to existing iPad owners. What's missing is some argument about why iPad owners might buy an AppleTV. To be honest, I don't see how the

Interesting idea, but that would be too much of an invasion of privacy for my taste. It's one thing to tell someone where you are when they call (or email), but a completely different thing for your phone to update someone on your exact loc

A story can be satisfying because of its relevance. I think that is the case here. The topic is interesting to developers who want to understand how Apple approaches design, even though the story's structure might have some flaws.

Perhaps just adding a search box to the HN header or footer would help? It would certainly be better than clicking through to Google, then clicking to enter some search terms, then browsing a list of results on a completely different site.

The omission of the HTML, CSS and JS tools in the community edition is a bit of a shame. I can't imagine that much Groovy and Scala code is written that isn't related to a web application. I use IDEA at work. I could definitely get by writi

Fortunately, SVG and VML don't limit you to just vector graphics. You can render, transform and scale raster graphics within the vector graphics space. The graphic is just like a textured polygon that you can move around. Consider how 3D en

The author already mentioned that he uses ExCanvas for IE. I don't think it's a stretch to use a library for what would otherwise be tedious recoding of the same logic in both SVG and VML. If a library helps you deliver the software faster

If redraw speed is a problem, perhaps in-browser vector graphics (SVG, VML) would be a better solution than raster (Canvas). There are probably a few libraries around for this sort of thing, but the one I've had experience with is Raphael:
