I have a 1960s steel Omega that keeps pretty good time and that I wear most days. It's comfortable and pretty and never actively tries to get my attention (other than being an objectively nice object to look at). It's also, in com

I credit Civ I with my almost failing my GCSEs, but I guess I did okay in the end. But then I have in the decades since avoided games I could happily play all night :).

True, and I'm just guessing here at the tenor of the film. All the same, if he probably wasn't as comically villainous as Shakespeare had him, he was still a bad king by the standards of his day. Because he lost. Nice user name, b

I've not seen the film, and I don't know how fair the criticisms are, yet it does feel like there is an unexplored irony in making the crux of the film a battle against authority, while also trying to rehabilitate an absolute mona

What I want to make remote work better is a laptop with the camera positioned behind the screen, maybe two thirds the way up. I don't care if this makes for a small dead zone in the screen. I want to be able to look directly at the per

Agreed. My first thought was: yep, those actually are bizarre pictures - like some hideous experiments to cross steam trains with hazel trees or giant squids.

Yep! Being the first mover doesn't seem to have helped Kodak much. They spent what must have been huge amounts on r&d - all to ultimately destroy their film cash cow, and be taken over by electronics firms.

I'm genuinely curious here: is first mover advantage real? I can think of plenty of examples where the second mouse got the cheese, so to speak (digital cameras being one; search another; electric cars another, etc etc). Where has bein

Indeed! We already have dedicated parking spaces for the disabled. Keep those, get rid of all the others.

My job is what I want to work on. But I'm lazy, and I know myself well enough to know that if I didn't have to go through the things I dislike about my job (hello doing performance reviews), I'd stop doing it all. And it wo

Agreed. And well, if everyone played the game, then the population at large would still be better off taking the million. I can well imagine there being fewer social problems if we all get a million fun bucks versus half of us getting fif

I'm currently trying to buy a house. It sucks! Does indeed feel like a general rule that anything with the potential to improve one's life significantly will frequently be unpleasant to go through.

True from my experience and talking to female friends. Men have trouble at the top of the funnel; women have trouble further along (when, of course, more emotional investment has gone in, and more time too).

I do have some sympathy with the general idea that we should be able to build a whole lot more than we are. The article takes some odd inspiration though. Marc "build but don't dare build near me" Andreessen. And Uber, which

I wonder if this has changed since then though. I had surgery on my shoulder a couple of years ago, and had a one week prescription for opioids, then it was as much Tylenol as I could eat but nothing stronger.

I got sworn at recently for walking over a crosswalk at a normal place. The driver (blue Tesla) seemed to think that anything other than trotting across was a dire insult to him. I bet he's awful to cyclists.

"In Javanese mythology, the gamelan was created by Sang Hyang Guru in Saka era 167 (c. AD 230)" According to Wikipedia. Presumably there's a history of protogamelans, but still.

Dark grey houses, why? I've seen so many recently renovated and for sale houses painted the drabest colours and I really don't understand it at all. It's like a symbol for being tasteful, without actually having any taste.

Could you explain why your solutions are being blown off? Is it because you're at a top-down environment which doesn't listen to junior engineers as a matter of course? If that's the case, then it's an unusual situation
