I find the usability and elegance of Racket to be far better than Clojure. Clojure feels messy, mostly due to the JVM. Racket feels clean and fun and expressive. The ecosystem is better integrated as well. Clojure's performance is of c

Yeah they're kind of assholes. Racket has a much nicer community, though.

He’s saying that if you append the value you’re looking for at the end, you don’t need a bounds check since you are guaranteed to find it at the very end. Kind of like C strings terminated with NUL.

I prefer to keep the approximate performance of my code in my head as I write it to ensure that I'm using appropriate data structures and abstractions since it's often costly to change these things after your profile.

I feel like we are now living in a world in which figuring about the performance of your code is almost impossible. Between hopspot compilers, bytecode, CPU intrinsics, vectorization, caches, pipelining, GC, branch prediction, etc how is on

Spark is written in Scala, not Python. I've never used the Python interface, but I've extensively used Spark from Scala and while it's a little annoying to work with sometimes, for "real" Big Data (data set > 1TB

Crippled lambdas, no pattern matching, no static typing (also no HKT), no macros, no threads, no actors, no currying, no practical FP, the list goes on and on.. Moreover, the performance is awful, everything is boxed, and there’s no support

I don’t really want Java as a data science language, but Scala would be a perfect fit. There’s already a nice data frame library that I helped develop at my old company called Saddle. Now we just need some quant finance libraries (like the

Hopefully this can pave the way for deep learning and data analysis for Scala/Java. It's really frustrating having to use a subpar and inexpressive language like Python because of the huge data science network effect. Or if Julia

It's not really about speed, it's about comfort. I can type with both layouts very quickly, but can maintain my speed for longer on Dvorak. Moreover, Qwerty makes my hands hurt very very quickly, while I can keep typing with Dvora

I don't think there are really any downsides. I can type in both Dvorak and QWERTY at over 120wpm and don't have any trouble switching between the two. I also use QWERTY on my phone, so maybe that helps a bit. Dvorak is definitely

That would be pretty awesome if a compiler could infer the lifetimes of (some) objects. It would especially help for paradigm that involve a lot of short-term allocations, like FP.

by mruts 7y ago
Isn’t that the same with as C? You can use alloca to allocate on the stack, giving you the same benefit as RAII (I think?). I haven’t used C++ so maybe I’m speaking out of my ass though. But regardless, you could use the Boehm GC for object

by mruts 7y ago
Functional programming can’t really exist in any meaningful way without GC. If you’re not a FP developer, it’s easy to think that memory allocation falls into two categories: a) short-term objects that can be allocated on the stack, or b) l

Do you really prefer a language to not have higher order functions than with them? Quick, what does this do (in Scala)? (1 to 100).map(x => x * x).reduce(_ + _) ? Or if you don't like the underscores we could make it more explicit:
