I don't know about remote (No finance firms I know of would allow that), but I haven't even graduated from college and I make good good money working as a quant at a bank. Maybe you don't want to wear a suit and tie each day

It really depends, finance is a big big place. There are banks that are terrible and there are banks that are pretty great. Also finance is the buy-side as well, and the buy-side is pretty lax, especially if you are working at a small prop

I can format equations in latex in fewer characters than I could express in Lisp, so what you’re saying about 2D vs 1D really doesn’t make any sense.

Amazon pay is shit. I was laughed out of the room for asking for a salary that some analysts make in finance. People get paid so much more in finance than any other industry that I wonder why tech people aren’t more interested in those jobs

I live in Africa and around here, people don’t trust men with this kind of work. I have a housekeeper and so do many people, and every single one is a women. You might not be able to prevent them from stealing, but you feel a lot safer than

This is reason humans naturally form hierarchies. It changes the system from O(n^2) to like O(n log n).

What about (+ (/ 1 2) 5) and 1/2 + 5? Also if you think parens and prefix notation are so great, would you also like to see math papers written that way?

I don’t really understand these kind of arguments. Seasoned lispers use ‘ or #’ or a backtick or ,@ all the time. Or look at the CL loop macro. If I had to wrap every function in CL with (function ...) I would shoot myself. Same thing with

No one actually likes the parens of Lisp. I mean, just look at Racket2. Even the dedicated lispers who work on Racket think they suck. I’ve written both Racket and Common Lisp professionally and consider myself very competent in both. In fa

I use Emacs and have been wanting to try spacemacs or evil because I suspect that modal editing is more efficient. Moreover my fingers hurt a lot and Emacs definately isn’t helping. The only thing preventing me from switching to evil (I wou

Does the language support macros? If not, it’s totally worthless. Python is a pretty bad language for even casual FP, and a S-exp syntax layer isn’t going to help.

How could anybody working not realize it was embezzling money? It’s not possible to run a 70 man team on 60m of capital, even with 2 and 20. One of my friends is a partner at a hedge fund that manages 100m and has three partners, no employe

This seriously worries me. Every generation thinks that what they do is disposable and not worth preserving. Source code from even just 20 years ago discarded and lost, priceless and one of a kind computer systems thrown into the sea, old m

There's no way minified js plus compression isn't smaller than just compression alone. It's not possible.

I used to run with a sketchy group of homeless people that did heroin together in NYC. Most of them were making over $100 panhandling/hustling/scamming per day. It’s probably lower in other places, though.

No, he would make more money using debt than selling shares. Assume he borrows at 3%, then Amazon just needs a higher return than 3% and he has made more money than just selling the shares. What you’re saying doesn’t make any sense.

That’s not true, the Saudis do very well for themselves. The entire citizen population is given massive handouts, and it seems to be working out okay. Corruption isn’t very bad, at least compared to other oil states. Also Kuwait is doing g

I live in a poor African country, and even here, people choose to buy things instead of their basic needa being met. Meat instead of beans, alcohol, weed, cigarettes, etc. They rather go hungry and get drunk than have a lot of bland food. T
