Debian does remove them by default. One of the problems FSF has is with the contrib and non-free repositories

IMO not, I personally like WingIDE more but I am using PyCharm on OSX as it is better integrated and has a better virtualenv support. You can always just try PyCharm for free

No, but for me <ESC> acts like <META> and the actual keybinding is M-. or M-_. The command you are looking for is yank-last-arg for bash and insert-last-word for zsh.

OpenSuse also ships with systemd per default. Other distributions like Arch or Debian support systemd as well. http://www.bootchart.org/ is also quite interesting to understand the boot process better and profile it.
