I had OpenBSD more recently on my Toshiba Libretto (Pentium 166) and it was great. You can even boot the installer from floppies, for machines without a CD drive or that can’t boot from it.

There's no support for x86_64 binaries. Windows 10 is still available in 32-bit editions and almost all apps are still available for 32-bit, so I don't think this is a big issue. I assume any kernel drivers will need to be compile

I would blow any dust out, and do a basic visual inspection of the logic board before you power it on. Macs of a certain age (like that LC630) have PRAM batteries which may have leaked/exploded, and capacitors which also may have leake

Assuming you have the disk space, I would get Disk Copy onto your old Mac, and create a read-only image from the contents of your hard disk. (or create a blank image, and copy the contents of your hard disk onto it) Then copy the image to a

The PRAM batteries on old Macs tend to leak/explode, and can make a total mess of the logic board. If you can, pull the batteries out ASAP! The electrolytic capacitors on most late-80s and early 90s Macs also will fail (and probably al

My OpenBSD router (a VM running on ESXi) is probably the most satisfying piece of modern technology I have. A joy to configure, update (every 6 months), and does exactly what I need it to with zero problems.

Apple isn’t breaking old/existing binaries, the new behavior only applies to binaries compiled against the 10.13 SDK.

HFS is open-source, both the kext and utilities (fun to see that fsck is using code from the early 90s Disk First Aid). I built the kext for Sierra and it wasn’t too hard. https://opensource.apple.com/source/hfs/hf

Toyota's previous generation of head units (all Entune-branded, started rolling out in 2013/2014) used different hardware platforms and OSes, depending on the supplier. But they all ran a UI that was virtually identical, although
