That's kind of a weird take. The vast majority of startup funding happens in the SF bay area. It is true that YC wouldn't have worked in another city (they did move it from Boston after all), but that's unrelated to PG and Je

Oh this is great. My kids _love_ educational videos. I've been looking for a way to get them more access minus all the garbage on Youtube.

There are people who think "law and order" means controlling individuals, and there are people who think "law and order" means enforcing laws that apply to government (and sometimes business). They can all be correct, te

We tried to build a JS runtime in Go and it was a disaster. .NET was actually a better choice, though we ultimately went with Rust (and ultimately, ultimately went with Deno ... which also started as Go).

Oh wow, I've been waiting for a self hosted app like this (with chat!). It's one of the few things I've missed since swearing off third party javascript.

There are tradeoffs. I work on Fly.io, so I can tell you why we chose to use anycast vs DNS for traffic direction. DNS for traffic direction actually starts with anycast. When you send a DNS lookup, it's typically to an IP announced fr

I love this quote: > I worry a little bit about hiding the places where the networking happens, just like I worry about ORM hiding the SQL. Because you can’t ignore either networking or SQL. The irony (or not irony, who even knows?), tho

We run a multi-geo service (Fly.io). Replicating user load on distributed apps is hard. Containers with env vars are easy though!

We've built a few multitenant products, and made friends with some other companies who've done the same. The tradeoff between "using an external FaaS system" and "just embedding v8" is pretty important. If your

We've been playing a lot with OSv. But unikernels aren't strictly sandboxing or isolation. If you're deploying a unikernel to ec2, you're just using their underlying isolation. You can't safely deploy multiple unike

Most antitrust laws are binary "is it or isn't it a monopoly". They're usually concerned with abuse of market power. In the US, we have much more stringent antitrust laws than actually get enforced by the DOJ. So the ans

Crystal is amazing (we sponsor it at Fly.io), but the sheer amount of stuff that's already built for Ruby makes it hard to switch to another language. Node has had 10 years and its still not there.

1. Cold start times are wildly variable. They can be <1s for optimized, fast booting docker images. We actually mask cold start time as much as possible, though, so you'll almost never see one. 2. There's no hard limit. We'

If you're selling hosting, you can either sell CPU at close to cost and make money on bandwidth, or make your margins on CPU. If people are building things that don't stress the CPUs at all, you can load up servers and make ~$60-7

Oh hello! (disclosure, I work on Fly.io). We're more like Fargate than Lambda, but Fly apps scale and balance across regions. I wouldn't really call it "more edgy", it's just built specifically for running app serve

They're right, though. Some companies are large enough to give you credibility cover during an outage. It's the same as the old phrase about no one ever getting fired for buying IBM.

Depression isn't "sad". Depression _can_ be a function of the environment, but it's still not "sad". Sad is a healthy, appropriate emotion. Depression is a numbness that makes it difficult to even feel sadness.
