It is pretty boring. But "the most boring possible way to build globally distributed postgres" is interesting, I think.

We need to optimize this. Right now, the edge proxy handles the replay request. So if you hit SJC and a server in LAX handles the request (which is probably what's happening for you), you pay the SJC -> LAX latency penalty before th

We observed two things from developers when we started working on this: 1. The first thing we did was give them CockroachDB. Modeling data for geo distributed Cockroach is conceptually similar to yugabyte. It's not easy, though, to do

Our postgres clusters are just a Fly app: https://github.com/fly-apps/postgres-ha You could run your own PG by modifying that app. Right now we're calling it "automated" and not managed, though. All aler

It's better, but still beta. We handle backups and you can connect directly to psql. We also added migration support as part of app releases. The global distribution feature, though, works with any database, not just our postgres. Betw

It sure ruins the illusion of "being at peace". Laying there and just slowly fading away? Peaceful. Getting stirred up so you break down faster? Ick. I'll probably get over it but I had a similar visceral reaction.

Webhooks are easy-ish to send and retry. Building the UX to help users successfully use webhooks is not simple. You need debugging tools, retry handling, notifications when they break (but not the first time they break, when they break repe

This is super cool. We know way more about Docker than we should now, but it seems like you could instrument local Docker for some teams.

It's a filter in the sales funnel, often intentionally. "Contact us for pricing" tells everyone what they need to know – either you have a big budget and are not price sensitive, or you're self service and this product i

The trick is to cash out by dying. You can do this by living off loans against your unrealized capital gains. These then get paid off at your death, and there are all kinds of "simple" ways to keep estate untaxed.

You do own taxes if you find a diamond. You don't owe taxes if you buy a rock for $10 and it increases in value to $50m. If you want to keep something you find and can't afford to because of taxes, you either get a loan or have to

Yes, people like it (for a while). This is why it works. But it gives Amazon more tools to abuse their market power. The cost is high though. Amazon is already much lower quality than they were 10 years ago.

We looked at Cortex but running a Cassandra cluster was a little too much for us. I don't think we saw M3 until after we'd started using VictoriaMetrics.

It's not a one time event, each host that runs a container image needs to pull it at least once. Minimizing pulls is a good optimization but you have to work pretty hard to really cut them down.
