We'd like to automate this! We've made it nearly transparent for Rails apps, and almost as transparent for Phoenix apps, but there's a lot of work to do. Right now with Rails you: 1. Provision your DB 2. Add regions 3. Add o

Do any states that allow bent frame repair without a salvage title? It's been a while, but back when I was buying cars at wholesale auctions, it was a big deal when one slipped through with a bent frame without a salvage title. They r

Oh I see! What a weird function. I've used datediff in mysql and it's ... different: https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.0/en/date-and-time-functi... So this is correct for years, right? &

It's hard to beat Rails for "need to make a CRUD app in front of a DB". Phoenix is pretty close, though. Where it really shines is anything beyond CRUD. I want to make my CRUD apps more dynamic, and build collaboration featur

I've been enjoying Phoenix. Specifically LiveView. I've never liked front end work before and LiveView gives lil old me the power to build incredibly interactive apps.

We wrote about this! https://fly.io/blog/32-bit-real-estate/ I'd hold them for 3+ years really. It seems very unlikely that IPs are going to lose value within 5 years. We're betting on 10+ years before t

There are 11 million people in the US who "moved across borders when they needed to". Is there a country people want to migrate to that successfully keeps them out?

We've done some "fat app servers" that consume GraphQL APIs. You could build a Phoenix + Absinthe app, then consume it from something like Remix. The real problem is switching languages. I sure get slow when I change from Eli

Also yes. That screenshot doesn't have anything to do with Netlify, it's our own busted app release on our own servers. :D

With Elixir specifically, you have the option of clustering these things. We (fly.io) send messages between servers using NATS. This works well with geographically distributed infrastructure, messages are somewhat peer to peer. If we were u

Kind of! We still use Equinix Metal in some regions. Leasing servers and buying colo isn't all that different from Equinix Metal so I'd class that as "our own hardware".

Google doesn't own nearly as many IPs as Amazon, so they have to do better at IPv6. AWS is incentivized to keep the world IPv4 as long as possible.

Our Postgres is not an RDS replacement. Lots of devs use RDS with Fly. In fact, Postgres on Fly is just a normal Fly app that you can run yourself: https://github.com/fly-apps/postgres-ha Ultimately, we think devs are

This is amazing. Raising a Series B with an enterprise sales model, then releasing a self service, bottoms up product is like the hardest possible shift. Hopefully it's exhilarating.

Yes that's true. But when we're talking about this on Hacker News, it's interesting to talk about the why. Especially when the why is "Google and Apple make more money this way".

Antitrust is much broader than "monopolies". It's all about concentrated power. Saying "monopoly" is just shorthand for market power, it's not a binary definition.

There are no free trial subscriptions with opt-in "continue paying" as far as I know. I mean, why would Apple and Google build that? They make more money with trial + automatic billing.

It's fair to criticize this, but it's worth noting that this is how subscriptions work in Google / Apple app stores. You really can't do anything else.
