All human life, sure. Maybe even all mammalian life. But ecosystems around hydrothermal vents won't care about nuclear winter, if that's your scenario.

Wrt housing, since overly restrictive zoning laws make it illegal in many cases to build, I think it'd be good to start by lobbying to change that.

I interpreted "private" from the comment above yours to mean membership determined by some authority. So your example doesn't hold well, because networking would still be enabled in the file sharing fork, but on a private net

The weaponization of zoning laws. It's literally illegal to build the housing people want and need thanks to them. Every US city needs zoning reform, to get rid of height maximums, parking minimums, and Single Family Only zoning.

No, I'm not agreeing with you. Regulation hasn't eliminated the down sides of alcohol, but it has certainly helped. Investing more in education is great, but you seem to think it should be everyone for themselves. I'd prefer

I think that's an oversimplification. People have problems sure, but just like alcohol, social media can and does exacerbate them. The answer to dealing with the former is regulation. I'm not sure that is feasible for the latter.

True, but as a percentage of GDP we're at historical (peacetime) highs.

It sounds like you're advocating for degrowth? Why would Americans willingly embrace being poorer?

My favorite thing to buy used is books! If it was written more than a year ago, odds are good you can find it for half the price of what it's selling for on Amazon. My go to is https://www.betterworldbooks.com

It's surprising to me they don't compare Teslas to other EV cars. Comparing to "average used car" which includes ICE, seems like apples to oranges. Hank Green [1] is of the opinion that used EVs are underpriced at the mo

We desperately need zoning reform in the US so that housing supply is allowed to increase.

Sounds like "time banking", which has myriad flaws. One of them is that your time is cheap when you're young and unskilled, and grows valuable as you grow old and become skilled (and have less time left). Each <unit of ti

Cycling on roads could be safer, but in the US at least, we're numb to car-caused deaths.

A decreasing population has a lot of collateral damage economically. I'd rather lessen zoning restrictions and let the market build.

How about p75 or higher instead? Nothing special about the median, and as others have pointed out, it's probably not enough to live in on given DC prices.

Higher GDP means, on average, better living conditions for the people that live in that country. This is a good thing. https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/human-development-index-v...

What's your problem with growth? Growth means higher GDP which is correlated with all sorts of good things, including longer lives, and less food scarcity.

I'm a fan of weightlifting, and agree that there are numerous health benefits to doing so, but I think the extra calorie burning is over-hyped. From what I've read you get 6-10 calories per pound of muscle per day, at rest. Not no

Nuclear winter is extremely unlikely to be survivable for most humans. With enough sediment in the atmosphere the earth will cool AND most crops will fail, causing world-wide famines.
