You seem to have mixed up your scenarios. In the standard model, i.e. constant dark energy, the universe ends in heat death. Big Crunch or Big Rip were never off the menu in the sense that our measurements couldn't exclude a value of w

It's not just convenience. Having a centralized authority - with all its downsides - comes with some crucial advantages. They can: * provide identities * moderate content * vouch for integrity * enforce a consistent set of features The

Isn't spoofing an email sender address much easier than taking over an account on a web-based forum? I think forums are very robust against that, while email and usenet are not.

That's regarding the size of the entries, not the frequency though. Many small comments in a short time frame will have a huge overhead. Also, there is a reason why binary content was first frowned upon, then became essentially a paid

Usenet has a few hard problems, no? Mostly related to moderation. You want to be able to edit or delete content, either your own, or, if you are a moderator, other content which turned out to be illegal later (which already implies content

But the claim was "th gravest of dangers". While your scenario is a nightmare, I'm not sure it qualifies as "the gravest".

You cannot create wormholes instantly, their creation is still bound by the speed of light. Also, the energy requirements for wormholes are well above of what one measly star can provide, not to speak of a host of other issues.

Interesting thought. I've never heard of this idea. Let's think it through. If I understood correctly, you suggest to turn the heat from fusion into a usable form of energy. On earth we'd do that using steam turbines. Harvest

There is the Hoyle state, a peculiar resonance state that is very important for nucleosynthesis. Without it, stars would not produce a lot of carbon. It appears to be finely tuned for complex chemistry and thus life to evolve. Wikipedia say

Sometimes I wonder how many unfinished (or should I say unpublished) works the greats like Mozart, van Gogh, Steinbeck, etc. had. Surely they didn't all produce masterpieces from the get go.

How do you resist the urge to generalize every little function you need? Doesn't it become overwhelming to make a library out of everything?

Getting a project to the point where it becomes clear that an idea works is one thing. But in my experience getting it polished to the point that other people can use it, and writing documentation and ideally test cases with it, and then au

I use vim, mutt, tig, newsboat, jless (if that counts) pretty much daily. Also a TUI Confluence client which I wrote and which I am the only user of as far as I know. Navigating Confluence becomes a breeze.

Isn't that a good use case for the bookmark function? To answer the actual question: I don't. Either I read it immediately or will never get back to it. There is always enough fresh content. I don't need another backlog. And

I heard comparisons of the number of stars in the observable universe to the number of all grains of sand on Earth's beaches, or the number of molecules in a bottle of air. Not sure if that helps anyone, though.

First of all: the question needs to be qualified by what we mean by "out there". The galaxy? The observable universe? The entire universe? The universe might be infinite, in which case: yes, there is life out there. We know the pr

LLMs aren't a good fit to do the hardest part of our job. They're great at doing mental routine tasks, though. They take the easy, boring, menial yet necessary parts of our jobs off our hands.

Two of your three points don't apply to Moxie's and some other implementations, for example Singe Packet Authentication. You can have sufficient bits, and it doesn't have to be cleartext. Maybe it's technically not port
