Agreed, if and only if the overemployment results in a detrimental service from the employee to the employer - as you say, if someone isn't pulling their weight and the reason for that is they're doing something else for someone e

To take the Machiavellian view, if you want to be nice, be nice to your wife and your kids. But not at work. Companies always look out for themselves. I have sympathy here for the OE who is simply looking out for themselves. IANAL - most

I just want to add that this wouldn't preclude conferences and journals either - these can continue to exist under this model, but their research output gets added to the central link library and the torrent added to P2P. Attendees to

I favour a centralised approach for record-keeping, but a decentralised approach for paper storage, if that makes any sense. E.g. if I were Emperor and could tear it all down and start again, we'd have either some kind of peer-to-peer

In the UK at least I can correct your timeframe to days and weeks, not weeks and months. The quickest I have found a contract position from a cold start is 45 minutes. Market's teeming and has been for years, aside from the obvious Cov

I'm sure these are great technological answers but this problem can be solved simply and quickly by a human. Not every issue needs to be solved by a butter robot. Why not employ a technical writer/documenter/whatever job titl

Perhaps you feel like you're chained in when you're working for an employer - I feel like it's a gilded cage. Yes, there's healthcare benefits, dental cover, bonus if I'm lucky, that kind of thing but at the end of

I have tried, and failed, and tried, and failed, to maintain interest in full time office-based positions. I just can't. I've never held a FTE position longer than 3 years. I'm nearing 40, by the way. I use my skills, such

I think there's a degree of civility brought about by IM, SMS in particular as you normally know the person, or have interacted with them long enough so that you consider them (and they consider you) part of your 'circle'. IR

Scope of his work didn't go that far, he looked at several devices and Alexa was notably chatty. He was measuring for abnormal data bursts from IoT home devices - included things like smart bulbs etc.

I use Github. Am I the only one? I'm sure it's not Github's ideal use case, but if they bin off my account, at least I have the files locally, and I take periodic backups to a physical drive that I store. Can't say it&

This is not strictly true. I examined a master's degree thesis last semester where the student proved conclusively that Alexa devices are periodically spamming bursts of data back to Amazon HQ even when not woken. Beyond a heartbeat,

The biggest issue contributing to aggression, passive-aggression, hostility etc. on microblogging sites like Twitter IMHO is the short-form. 200-odd characters is simply not enough to fully articulate some thoughts and is contrary to how pe

Leave. Honestly. I had a gig in a tiny company where the ritual was always to have a cup of tea/coffee at hand. People took it in turns to brew up. Which meant, with 3-4 people in the office, an enforced tea round every 45-60 minute
