Well, it does need two kinds of lambda, in a sense. In Lisp, something like with-file would be a macro, which solves the same problem that "blocks" are solving here.

Yeah, does anyone know what the deal with that is? I was really enjoying following Steele's notes on Fortress. I hope that neither the language nor the blog has been binned.

Note that source control in particular is particularly amenable to the command line, since the output of source control commands is blobs of text that refers to text files on disk; grepping around in it and wanting to access, process, or mo

I'm surprised that you feel you were able to measure something accurately with that list. I feel like it's very vague, and I don't have a clue how good I actually am for many of the important things like "problem decomposition", "systems d

I would happily sacrifice my ability to make a living writing software if it meant that all software was FOSS. That would absolutely thrill me to no end. I think that so much good would be done for the world therein that it would be ethic

Everyone else already said it, but you are completely dead wrong. Very little of the stuff on 4Clojure has anything to do with mathematics. It is about teaching you the standard library, concepts which are as common and fundamental in Clo

Your ideas about what is "logical" are completely arbitrary. Look, I can make up rules too: * '5' - 3 should return '5', since it's the string '5' minus all the instances of the character '3' in it. There is no other logical outcome! * '5

I was offering a response to the parent, who was asking whether we should pay for sanitation -- not to the situation in the article. I don't know what the right solution to Birmingham's problems is, and I've never even been to Birmingham,

"Right" is a word made for arguing about. Let's forget the word "right". Clean water and sanitation are pretty much the two things which most enable us to maintain population-dense cities. Lack of modern sanitation repeatedly led to horri

You're still giving the industry way too much credit for being reasonable. This is not a case of 600MB files named "Thor (2011)" that aren't Thor. In the link above, you can see that Warner Bros., having the copyright to the film "The Box"

Oscar, when your code itself is making little frowny faces at you after you write it, something has gone wrong. x == 1 ? alert(x) :( alert('Error'), x = 1, alert('All Fixed!') );

Bullshit. There are no "some people" who "like that" when Ubuntu does not update documentation to reflect the changes they have made to core functionality. That doesn't make any sense.

Six months? If you really want to pay money, then why don't you just spend an hour watching the Peepcode "Meet Emacs" screencast for twelve bucks, and then spend two weeks applying what you learned? Don't make it seem harder than it is.
