12h is maybe too much but I have worked with people from +/-4h, what you want most of the time is a decent overlap between all team members. Besides there are some roles such as SRE that need people 24/7 around the world

Kinda reminds me when LinkedIn invited your Gmail contacts without your consent. I think fb did something similar in the beginning. So the lesson is that if you want to grow quickly you do a land grab, just stomping on your user's righ

I agree. I even remember an article about an Amazon warehouse worker that could only afford diapers sold by Amazon because they were the cheapest. The irony. But like someone else mentioned, there are countries where Amazon has to pay minim

Consumers suffer because they won't buy that 50in tv? Really, any business that exploits workers should not exist. If some goods are just too expensive then people should really learn to live without them. I don't mind "suffe

I agree that what matters most is UX and battery life, but these are not fixed and are actually pretty malleable, otherwise the only thing that would beat a mbp could only be next year's mbp. I had a laptop with terrible battery (deskt

If you value your time like that you might as well sleep 2h less and earn 400$ every night. This is not a fair comparison because there are a lot of benefits of troubleshooting, most of them intangible. If you don't like it fine, just

I'm not familiar with scala but will take a look. Completely agree over your last point. I very much prefer libraries over frameworks, and as you said pointcuts are a bit fragile, but my main point is that they behave differently becau

Don't forget AOP can work on top of compiled classes, not sure I'd there is an equivalent in python or ruby.

If I give you a jar (or equivalent) of my compiled app, can you still apply cross cutting concerns (over compiled code you may not own)? Because that's what AOP and bytecode transformation can do.

I remember the Rails people making fun of the Spring stacktraces vs the Rails one (being much shorter). Guess what, a couple of years later Rails has the same layers of abstraction

Academia is geared towards paper publishing, so why would they bother with code quality? Even if in the long run it would benefit them, its at best a nice to have. Most academia doesn't share code or data anyway. It's like saying

This assumes conditions don't change. With enough time, a treatment or cure can be found. In the future, hindsight will be 20/20 but right now the wisest is to buy time to understand the spread and disease better.

Of course it is. Stealing is taking what is not given. People can play with words and logic all day but that's it. If you take something that was not given to you it's stealing. In case of torrents, the owner of the media obviousl

Ecosystem is a real problem, but motivated engineers will make it work no matter what. I mean, banks run on COBOL. Besides, I am willing to bet idiomatic rust is 2x-10x faster than idiomatic kotlin.

Err, no it is not safe unless you trust the app you are running to validate the certificate chain. Not so long ago, I found out my bank's app didn't validate the cert and I could happily put a proxy and intercept all calls.
