Actually the JVM is one of the reasons I would recommend clojure. It's a fine piece of engineering; much more solid than most VMs out there. Lots of tools for perf/monitoring/debugging. Why would you require an existing C lib

There's some libs that don't quite work with GraalVM yet, due to some unsupported features. I'm guessing these issues will be solved quickly enough, and then we will be able to deploy small binaries :)

Fair enough, I think I understand what you mean. FB, as an app, could be much better.

Correct, but with a few users you can get away by cutting corners, with lots of users you will have MxN potential corner cases you will have to deal with. More users -> more bugs.

I believe you are falling in a trap that some people fall when they do this kind of analysis; I don't doubt that you (and lots of other users on this forum) are completely capable of doing a facebook-like app that is much more efficien

True, I remember seeing a site circa 2005 that had a completely crazy flash intro with 3d/360 camera pan thing - running on a regular 2005/6 computer. I think things are more polished now, because of bandwidth we can afford large

Find some help. You really can't do it by yourself. Really, find someone who can guide you through. Drop me a message, I'll be happy to just listen.

I studied Chinese medicine, did an internship on a local clinic with very low cost. We got mostly old people coming. Some points below: 1. Generalising acupuncture treatments is the same as saying ALL programmers are equal - there is a huge

JavaScript has been a victim of its own success in many ways. It's so popular that other languages just transpile to js. In the end it runs js, but it doesn't matter much. OTOH good libraries have bindings for the source language

Meh. If the backing store is not SQL, why would a SaaS provide a (much harder to implement) SQL layer with all its standards (92, 99, 2003) and quirks instead of writing a (probably) much simpler custom query language?

Following that logic, it should require the 30% until the costs of R&D are covered. This is monopolistic behaviour. I write an app, can't install on someone's device without paying apple? Want 30% fine but it's my device,

May I ask where did you get that number? I realized that you only mentioned the US, and I guess the parent was talking about the globe, but still I'd like to know.

It's not hate, it's armchair criticism most of the time. People assume their engineering skills transfer over any walk of life, so they feel entitled to voice an opinion just by taking a glance at an idea/code/site/

No serious cash to be earned in that market? If you optimized software for low resources, I'm sure most websites would throw away js ads...

The immediate application of it is that when you choose a DB, you should be able to tell if it's either CP or AP. The field is full of subtleties (eg Network is not 100% reliable so no system should be CA - it's way subtler but th

I wasn't talking about any particular language. Scala is an interesting example, you have some good software written in it (Kafka, Scalding, Finagle) even with not-so-good IDEs. As for clojure, I have yet to find an environment as good

When these discussions come up, I always remember a comment from a guy (sorry, can't remember his name) in the scala google groups. People were arguing that the scala compiler was too complicated and someone wanted to write a new langu

My 2 cents are: if you don't know what queries your orm API is generating, you shouldn't use one. I mean, sometimes there are bugs here and there, but people should know the methods they call. It's the equivalent of making a

I think like this too. Would only like to add that I believe a type parameter is *variant in relation to a function/method, not just by itself. That's why some people say "appears in a covariant position " and so on.

There's a big cost of moving stuff in and out of the gpu. Unless it's a big/heavy workload, the CPU will be faster because of this.
