Well said. Every project has to determine their own path to sustainability. Knowing only what I've read here, I'd sell support in seat packs, e.g. $1000/yr for every 250 users. A good sized university might have 1000 engine

This is exactly why I disclosed my revenue: people won't know there's a successful path forward unless it's disclosed. I want more OSS developers to follow my lead and build a bright future for themselves based on their

You can license your code however you like as long as you own the copyright. You can license it as GPL and sell an alternative commercial license for money.

(sidekiq dude here) I had no idea what I was doing. I found a local lawyer who incorporated me for $1000. He wrote the commercial license for my software for another $750. I had a friend who was a CPA and taught me how to keep books. I

Kudos for even thinking about the long term and sustainability. So many people just create a project with nothing more than the first/next release in mind. Good luck, whatever you do.

Charging for support incentivizes you to provide poor documentation and frustrates the customer.

If you google the buyer's address, it's home to a package forwarding service. Do not ever do business with a buyer using such a service. 100% guarantee it's a scam. https://www.google.com/maps/place

If the master fails, your app gets a READONLY error due to the failover, you disconnect and reconnect the connection. Their network magic ensures you get the new master.

I believe elasticache has its own internal HA. Your client must disconnect and reconnect if the Redis suddenly becomes read-only (due to a failover). https://github.com/mperham/sidekiq/blob/master/lib&#x

Changes contributed to Sidekiq are LGPL. Changes contributed to Sidekiq Pro must also assign rights for those changes to me so I can sell them. I do have customers who have access to the Sidekiq Pro source code and send me pull reques

Sidekiq fetches jobs same as how Resque fetches, which is based on what is easy to do in Redis: LPOP. It's been that way since day one. Adding reliable fetching is much, much harder than you think. It's taken me years to get it

Most buy for the features. It's hard for a business to justify giving money to someone for nothing. I'm a big fan of selling something tangible, even if rather minor, rather than just a license. My guess is that I'd have 2

Once my OSS project became popular, I started a business and switched to an open core model. Businesses buy additional features, I get recurring revenue so that I am paid to maintain the OSS and commercial parts. http://sidekiq.

Generally you license the code so competitors have a disadvantage e.g. with GNU licenses, they may have to open source any changes they make. As the copyright holder, you can do things with the code that they cannot (since you don't h

Not with MRI. The standard Ruby interpreter, like Python, uses a global lock to prevent threads from executing in parallel. You'd need to spin up 8 Sidekiq processes by hand or use the multi-process feature to automate that manual pr

Good questions. Couple of things to note: 1. My paid features are all built on the core APIs that are open source. Almost every feature I sell has an OSS variant that someone has written. If you want to plug in a dozen different OSS libr
